4 Watch Trivia

Nowadays, a wristwatch is one of the most widely-used time-keeping devices. Ask your mom, dad, sister, or brother – and everyone has one or more watches.

However, the questions remain. Do you know that a watch smiles at you when you buy one? Do you know why men started wearing wristwatches in the past? If you cannot say yes to these questions, then you must continue to read. Please read all about it here!

Men And Wristwatches

Women were the first people to start wearing wristwatches. However, they were worn as fashion accessories rather than to keep track of Time.

Moreover, wristwatches during that period were marketed as bracelets for women. Compared to women, Men were more likely to use a pocket watch to tell the Time.

During the first World War, wristwatches gained more popularity among men. It became more practical to read the Time from the wrist rather than from a pocket watch, as it was also easier.

Now, today’s watches are timepieces that can tell you the Time. They are now also fashion accessories to complement your fit.

Happy Time

Does the phrase Happy Time ring a bell? Here’s why it does! Happy Time is a phrase often used to sell watches.

The phrase derives its name from the appearance of watch displays in shops. The watches in shops are set to 10:10, making them look like they are smiling at you, making you more eager to buy them.

Other reasons for this include the following:

  • The hands do not overlap.
  • The logo or brand is usually in the middle of the dial. The logo is perfectly visible by setting the hands at ten after 10 (or ten before 2).
  • Other elements on the dial are often at the three, the six, or the nine. Think, for example, of the date indicated or other small dials.

The First Waterproof Watch

In the early days of watches, there did not exist a watch that could withstand water. However, it was in 1926 that it changed. In 1926, the world’s first waterproof watch was produced.

Watch sellers demonstrated proof of the watch’s waterproof properties by putting this watch in a bowl full of water to prove that the watch was indeed waterproof.

You can test if your watch is waterproof by gently rubbing an ice cube over your watch. If a light fog on the glass’s inner side appears, your watch isn’t waterproof anymore.

An example of a good waterproof watch is the Seiko 5 sports line. The Seiko 5 sports line is also reliable and comes from a reliable watch brand. Seiko is a premiere luxury watch brand founded in 1881.

The brand’s story began with a 21-year-old entrepreneur, Kintaro Hattori, who opened a shop selling and repairing watches and clocks in central Tokyo. More than twenty years later, the ‘Seikosha’ factory was opened.

Watch And Wear

Another fun trivia about watches is how people wear them. Most people prefer to sport their watches on the opposite wrist of their writing hand. This way, it prevents the watch from incurring scratches.
