An interview with Mrs. Aditi Shrivastava, Senior Teacher at Transcendental Meditation and Academic Advisor at MUIT

In an enlightening interview with Mrs. Aditi Shrivastava, a Senior Teacher of Transcendental Meditation and an Academic Advisor at MUIT, we delve into her unique approach to education and mindfulness.

With years of experience, Mrs. Shrivastava emphasizes the importance of integrating meditation into academic settings, fostering not only intellectual growth but also emotional well-being among students. Her insights shed light on the transformative power of mindfulness in education.

How did you first discover Transcendental Meditation, and what inspired you to become a part of this movement?

Aditi Shrivastava: I was fortunate to discover Transcendental Meditation (TM) at an early age, and it has been an integral part of my life for over three decades. TM effortlessly became a part of my daily routine, and I quickly realized its transformative power.

What inspired me to become a part of this movement was the profound impact TM had on my life, it made me self-sufficient in handling challenges and brought about a real, positive change.

I was deeply moved by the teachings of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, whose simple and practical approach to meditation resonated with me.

His vision of creating a better world through the expansion of consciousness inspired me to undergo the required training to become a certified TM teacher. I wanted to be a medium to facilitate this powerful knowledge and help others experience the same transformation I had.

What do you believe are the most significant benefits of practicing TM for individuals in their personal and professional lives?

Aditi Shrivastava: The benefits of TM are profound and multifaceted. In personal and professional lives, TM brings:

  • Clarity in thought: Like the sun shining through a clearing fog, TM helps individuals gain mental clarity.
  • Stability and progress: It provides a stable foundation while fostering a progressive mindset.
  • Broad comprehension: TM allows individuals to have a bird’s-eye view of situations, enabling them to understand multiple perspectives, whether in professional or personal contexts.
  • Stress management: By reducing stress, TM enhances productivity and overall well-being, making individuals more effective in their work and personal lives.

TM is known for reducing stress and enhancing mental clarity. Can you elaborate on how this technique differs from other meditation practices in achieving these benefits?

Aditi Shrivastava: TM stands apart from other meditation practices due to its simplicity and effectiveness. It works by taking the mind to its purest state, which is expansive, clear, and quiet. Imagine a lake: you can only see a clear reflection when the surface is still.

Similarly, TM allows the mind to settle into a state of deep rest, where thoughts become clear and stress dissolves naturally.

Unlike other techniques that may require concentration or effort, TM is effortless and natural. Research studies have shown that TM provides profound rest, reducing cortisol levels and enabling the body to handle stress more effectively. This deep rest is essential in today’s fast-paced world, where stress levels are constantly rising.

Transcendental Meditation has been integrated into corporate, educational, and healthcare settings. What are some of the most impactful success stories you have witnessed?

Aditi Shrivastava: One of the most impactful stories I’ve heard involves a corporate employee who was initially skeptical about TM. He decided to practice TM honestly for two months to prove it wouldn’t work, monitoring his blood pressure throughout.

To his surprise, his blood pressure improved significantly, and he became a strong advocate for TM. This highlights that TM works regardless of belief—it’s the technique itself that brings results.

Another inspiring story is of an HR professional who, after practicing TM for just 15-20 days, was told by her doctor that her medication for depression could be reduced.

These stories demonstrate the tangible benefits of TM in real-life settings, from corporate environments to personal health.

Scientific studies highlight the positive effects of TM on mental health. How do you see this practice contributing to emotional resilience and overall well-being in today’s fast-paced world?

Aditi Shrivastava: In today’s fast-paced world, emotional resilience is more important than ever. TM helps individuals maintain a positive state of mind, enabling them to cope with daily challenges—whether at work, school, or home.

By reducing stress and promoting mental clarity, TM fosters emotional well-being and the ability to bounce back from difficult situations.

As traditional social and family structures weaken, TM provides a tool for individuals to find inner stability and peace. It helps people stay grounded, focused, and emotionally balanced, even in the face of adversity.

The Maharishi Corporate Development Programme and Consciousness-Based Education integrate TM into professional and academic settings. How do these initiatives help individuals and institutions?

Aditi Shrivastava: The Maharishi Corporate Development Programme helps individuals manage work-life balance, enhances creativity, and boosts productivity.

When employees practice TM together, it creates a harmonious environment, reducing friction and fostering teamwork. Many corporations report increased productivity and innovation as a result.

In educational settings, Consciousness-Based Education focuses on expanding the consciousness of learners.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi explained that just as a larger bucket can hold more water, an expanded mind can process and implement more knowledge.

TM provides the experience of transcendence, which expands the brain’s capacity and enhances learning. This approach creates a more harmonious and effective educational environment.

TM has been embraced by many influential personalities worldwide. What do you think makes it universally appealing across different demographics?

Aditi Shrivastava: TM’s universal appeal lies in its simplicity, practicality, and immediate effectiveness. It doesn’t require any specific belief system or lifestyle change, making it accessible to people from all walks of life.

For example, I once taught a small group of eight individuals, a university student, a woman taking a break from work, a retired scientist, a working couple, and others.

Despite their diverse backgrounds, they all reported feeling uniquely satisfied with their TM practice and experienced benefits within just 4-5 days.

This demonstrates how TM can cater to the unique needs of different demographics while delivering consistent results.

As TM continues to expand globally, what upcoming projects or initiatives are you most excited about, and how do you see the future of TM evolving?

Aditi Shrivastava: TM has been around for over 60 years, and its timeless knowledge continues to evolve. I am particularly excited about the group practice of TM and the TM-Sidhi Program, which have the potential to raise collective consciousness and create a more peaceful, progressive society.

Our organizations worldwide are continuously training people in TM and its advanced programs, encouraging group practices that strengthen the foundation of collective consciousness.

As TM expands globally, I see it playing a pivotal role in fostering a more harmonious and uplifted world, where individuals and communities thrive together.

Mrs. Aditi Shrivastava’s dedication to blending Transcendental Meditation with academic guidance offers a refreshing perspective on holistic education.

Her commitment to nurturing both the mind and spirit of students highlights the potential for personal and academic success through mindfulness practices.

As educators seek innovative ways to enhance learning environments, her experiences serve as a valuable blueprint for fostering resilience and creativity in future generations.
