An Exclusive Interview with Mr. Ajay Gupta, Founder & Principal Consultant at Perceptive Ideas Consulting Engineers Pvt. Ltd.
Ajay Gupta, Founder and Principal Consultant at Perceptive Ideas Consulting Engineers Pvt. Ltd., stands at the intersection of innovation and engineering excellence.
In this interview, he shares insights into his firm’s creative problem-solving approach, sustainable design philosophy, and unwavering commitment to delivering technically sound and forward-thinking engineering solutions.
What inspired you to start Perceptive Ideas Consulting Engineers Pvt. Ltd.?
Ajay Gupta: Perceptive Ideas was founded in 2014 with a vision to bring innovation, integrity, durability, and precision into the field of structural engineering.
After spending years in the industry, I observed a gap between architectural ambition and structural feasibility — particularly the need for creative, durable, and sustainable engineering solutions that stand strong over time.
The goal was to create a consultancy that not only designs safe, sustainable, and techno-commercial projects but also partners closely with architects and clients to translate vision into viable engineering.
The name Perceptive Ideas reflects our belief that thoughtful perception leads to intelligent and enduring design.
What are the primary areas of specialisation for Perceptive Ideas Consulting Engineers?
Ajay Gupta: We specialise in structural design and engineering consultancy across sectors including residential, commercial, hospitality, institutional, and public infrastructure.
Our expertise extends to BIM-enabled design, retrofitting and rehabilitation, structural health monitoring, and peer reviews.
Over the past decade, we have been privileged to work on landmark projects such as Aurika Hotels (Udaipur and Mumbai), JW Marriott Shimla, Thapar University Projects (awarded RIBA), Vanijya Bhawan Delhi, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Centre New Delhi, and Taj Amer Jaipur, among others. Every project we undertake is guided by our focus on performance, efficiency, long-term durability, and sustainability.
How is your firm integrating emerging technologies into engineering consulting practices?
Ajay Gupta: We are among the early adopters of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in structural design, enabling 3D coordination, clash detection, and improved construction sequencing.
Our workflows integrate advanced simulation tools for performance-based analysis, including wind, seismic, and thermal studies.
We continuously strive to upgrade building design using new construction materials and technologies that not only reduce timelines but also minimize carbon footprints.
For this, we adopt the latest material specifications and sustainable design practices tailored to each project’s requirements.
Our approach focuses on developing techno-commercial solutions — structures that are not only safe and efficient but also economical and environmentally responsible.
Technology, for us, is not a parallel process; it is central to engineering creativity. From incorporating base isolators and dampers for seismic safety to leveraging smart materials and analytical tools, we aim to design intelligent, adaptive, and resource-efficient structures.
What challenges do consulting engineers face today, and how are you navigating them?
Ajay Gupta: The biggest challenge today is balancing cost-efficiency with quality, safety, and sustainability in an increasingly budget-driven market. Additionally, evolving codes, compressed project timelines, and interdisciplinary coordination demand constant adaptability.
We address these challenges through robust digital workflows, strong internal quality systems, and close collaboration with architects, developers, contractors, and material manufacturers to ensure updated and project-specific material specifications.
Continuous learning, process standardisation, and knowledge-sharing within our team help us maintain both agility and precision while meeting techno commercial goals.
What opportunities do you foresee in niche engineering consulting areas?
Ajay Gupta: We see significant potential in green and smart infrastructure, seismic retrofitting, and digital twin–based structural health monitoring systems.
With increasing awareness of sustainability, safety, and lifecycle performance, the demand for innovative, performance-based structural design will continue to grow.
Future-ready consulting practices will merge engineering with advanced technologies such as AI-supported analysis, predictive maintenance, and smart instrumentation — defining a new era of intelligent and responsive structures.
Are there plans to expand into new service areas or geographies?
Ajay Gupta: Yes, we are actively exploring collaborations beyond northern India, particularly in western and southern regions.
Our goal is to strengthen our presence in tier-1 cities and expand internationally in specialised consultancy for high-rise and hospitality structures.
Simultaneously, we are working toward establishing a dedicated digital design division that integrates BIM, AI, and advanced structural analytics for global project delivery.
What advice would you give to young engineers aspiring to enter the consulting space?
Ajay Gupta: Engineering consulting is a discipline that blends science with vision. My advice to young engineers is to build a strong technical foundation and stay curious about evolving technologies, advanced materials, mechanical devices, and structural instrumentation.
Go beyond drawings — understand how structures truly behave in the real world. Integrity, precision, and a learning mindset will always stand out more than software proficiency alone.
Engineering is not just about calculations; it’s about creating solutions that are intelligent, resilient, and enduring.
Ajay Gupta’s vision for Perceptive Ideas exemplifies how thoughtful engineering and purposeful innovation can shape smarter, resilient infrastructures.
His dedication to excellence continues to inspire the next generation of engineers, underscoring that great ideas, when combined with expertise, can redefine the boundaries of modern engineering and sustainable growth.
