Albert Einstein: The Genius Behind the Theory of Relativity

Albert Einstein

Albert Eindtein was a German-born theoretical physicist. He is widely held to be one of the greatest and most influential scientists of all time. He is best known for developing the theory of relativity.

What did Albert Einstein invent

He also made important contributions to quantum mechanics, and was thus a central figure in the revolutionary reshaping of the scientific understanding of nature that modern physics accomplished in the first decades of the twentieth century.

His mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc2, which arises from relativity theory, has been called “the world’s most famous equation”.

In 1921, he received the “Nobel Prize in Physics” for his services to theoretical physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect”. He was marked in 130 leading physicists worldwide by the British Journal Physics World in 1999.

Background information on Einstein’s family and upbringing

Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879, in Ulm, Germany. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest scientific minds in history.

He is renowned for his ground breaking contributions to physics, particularly the development of the theory of relativity, Einstein’s legacy extends far beyond the scientific community. His early life was marked by an inquisitive nature and a fascination with mathematics and physics.

His academic brilliance eventually led him to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. There in 1900 he earned a degree in physics. However, he faced challenges in finding employment. Einstein persisted in his pursuit of knowledge and secured a position at the Swiss Patent Office in 1902

Marriages and family life

Correspondence between Einstein and Marić, discovered and published in 1987. They had a daughter Lieserl.  Einstein and Marić married in January 1903. In May 1904, their son Hans Albert was born in Bern, Switzerland. Their son Eduard was born in Zürich in July 1910.

In 1912, Einstein entered into a relationship with Elsa Löwenthal, who was both his first cousin on his mother’s side and his second cousin on his father’s. Einstein and Marić were granted a divorce on 14 February 1919 on the grounds of having lived apart for five years.

Einstein married Löwenthal in 1919. Later in 1923, he began a relationship with a secretary named Betty Neumann, the niece of his close friend Hans Mühsam. Löwenthal nevertheless remained loyal to him, accompanying him when he emigrated to the United States in 1933.

In 1905, a momentous year often referred to as his “annus mirabilis” or “miracle year,” Einstein published four ground breaking papers that revolutionized the field of physics. His equation, E=mc^2, became the iconic representation of the interrelationship between energy and mass.

Continuing his exploration of the universe’s fundamental principles, he later formulated the general theory of relativity, published in 1915. It provided a new understanding of gravity, proposing that massive objects cause a curvature in the fabric of space time.

His impact extended beyond theoretical physics. He was an outspoken advocate for civil rights, pacifism, and social justice. Fleeing Nazi Germany in the 1930s, Einstein settled in the United States. There he became a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.

Awards and honors received throughout his career

In 1921, he was Awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his explanation of the photoelectric effect. Einstein’s contributions to science earned him unparalleled acclaim. Yet, he remained humble, emphasizing the importance of curiosity and imagination in the pursuit of knowledge.

Albert’s legacy endures as a symbol of intellectual curiosity, innovation and the power of the human mind to unlock the mysteries of the universe. His theories continue to shape the foundations of modern physics.  His influence extends into various aspects of human thought, inspiring generations to come.
