Alia Bhatt is a British actress with Indian descent. She is an actress, singer & model. She is known for her work in Hindi language movies.
She has received several awards including four Filmfare Award. She is considered as India’s one of the most paid actresses. Alia Bhatt has appeared in Forbes India’s Celebrity 100 list since 2014. In 2017, she was featured by Forbes Asia in there 30 Under 30 list.
Alia Bhatt is the daughter filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt & actress Soni Razdan. She made her debut as a child artist in Sangharsh in 1999. In 2012, she played her first leading role in Karan Johar’s Student of the Year.
In 2014, she won the FIlmfare Critics Award for Best Actress for movie Highway. Later on, she went on to establish herself with leading roles in many movies of Karan Johar’s studio Dharma Productions.
They are 2 States, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, Badrinath Ki Dulhania & Dear Zindgi.
In 2016, she won three Filmfare Awards for Best Actress for Udta Punjab, in 2018 for Raazi & in 2019 for Gully Boy.
In 2022, she gained praise for Gangubai Kathiyawadi. In addition to acting, Alia Bhatt has launched her own line of handbags and clothing.
Alia Bhatt is the founder of the ecological initiative CoExit. Including the single “Samjawan Unplugged”, she has sung seven of her film songs.
Early life:
Alia Bhatt was born on 15th March 1993 in London, United Kingdom. She has born in to the Bhatt family to Indian film director Mahesh Bhatt & actress Soni Razdan.
Her father is of Gujarati descent & her mother is of Kashmiri Pandit & German ancestry. As she has born in London, she holds British citizenship.
Alia Bhatt is having an elder sister Shaheen & two half siblings Rahul Bhatt & Pooja Bhatt. Director Mohit Suri & actor Emraan Hashmi are her paternal cousins.
Producer Mukesh Bhatt is her uncle. Up to 12th standard she was educated at the Jamnabai Narsee School. But after that she dropped out due to pursue a career in acting.
At the age of five, in 1999, she debuted in her father’s production venture Sangharsh as a younger version of Preity Zinta’s character.
Career: 2012-2014:
In 2012, Alia had her first leading role in Karan Johar’s teen film Student of the Year alongside Varun Dhawan & Sidharth Malhotra.
For that movie, she auditioned along with 500 girls & even she reduced around 16 kg for that. As of Anupama Chopra of Hindustan Times, there are similarity between Shanaya Singhaniya of Student of the Year & Poo (Kareena Kapoor) in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.
Compare to Poo her performance was without the killer attitude. Student of the year grossed ₹960 million (US$13 million) at the box office & became a commercial success.

In 2014, Alia Bhatt acted in Imtiaz Ali’s movie Highway. Unfortunately, the movie underperforms at box office, but Alia won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress and also gained a Best Actress nomination at the ceremony.
Alia Bhatt also acted in Vikas Bahal’s short film Going Home. Again in 2014, she appeared in Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions two movies named ‘2 States’ & ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’.
As of Shubhra Gupta from The Indian Express in that movies Alia was ‘surprise, easy & fresh & natural’. Both movies were commercially successful, each earning over ₹1 billion (US$13 million) worldwide.
2015–2018
Alia Bhatt turned to vegetarian food in 2015. In 2015, she appeared in Bahal’s romantic comedy Shaandaar. She acted opposite Shahid Kapoor.
In 2016, her movie Kapoor & Sons was a critical & commercial success. She was in supporting role in that movie. In 2016, she appeared in Udta Punjab.
The movie generated controversy when the Central Boars of Film Certification demanded extensive censorship before its release. Later the Bombay High Court cleared it for exhibition with only one scene cut.
In that movie her performance was critically acclaimed. Next she played the role of a troubled young woman in Gauri Shinde’s Dear Zindgi opposite Shah Rukh Khan.
During that time, she received won the Screen Award and the Filmfare Award for Best Actress, and for the latter, she received an additional Best Actress nomination at Filmfare. Success continued with her next movie Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya in 2017.
The movie reunited her with Khaitan and Dhawan. She received another Filmfare nomination for Best Actress for Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya.
In 2018, Alia Bhatt appeared in Meghna Gulzar’s Raazi as Sehmat Khan, a Kashmiri spy. As of Anna M. M. Vetticad of Firstpost Alia was “stupendous” in the role, adding that “the young star once again displaying the maturity and confidence of a veteran on camera”.

Raazi was one of the highest-grossing female-led Hindi movies. It led Alia as the most successful contemporary actress of Hindi cinema. For that movie she won another Best Actress Award.
2019-present:
In 2019, Alia Bhatt launched her own production company company Eternal Sunshine Productions. She appeared in Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy opposite Ranveer Singh.
Gully Boy premiered at 69th Berlin International Film Festival. The movie earned over ₹2.37 billion (US$31 million). It was emerged as her highest-grossing release.
The film won 13 Filmfare Awards. She received her third Best Actress Award for that movie. In 2019, her film Kalank marked as her biggest-budget film.
In 2020, she starred in Sadak 2 with Sanjay Datt. It was a sequel to her father Mahesh Bhatt’s crime film Sadak (1991). Due to COVID-19 pandemic in India it could not be released theatrically and instead streamed on Disney+ Hotstar. She acted opposite Dutt & Kapur.
In 2020, she acted in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s crime drama Gangubai Kathiyswadi. It was premiered at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival.
For the preparation of the movie she studied the work of actress Meena Kumari for films Mandi & Memories of a Geisha.
As of Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV “the actress puts all doubts to rest with a marvelously lively performance”. Additionally, Stutee Ghosh of The Quint commended her “rare mix of innocence and jaw clenching seething anger”.During the same year she took a cameo appearance in the Telugu-language period movie RRR with N.T. Rama Rao Jr & Ram Charan.
Upcoming projects:
In Ayan Mukerji’s fantasy movie Brahmāstra. She will reunite with Karan Johar in his next romantic comedy Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani opposite Ranveer Singh.
Alia Bhatt will produce & act in black comedy movie Darlings opposite Shefali Shah. She will appear in the Netflix spy film Heart of Stone alongside Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan. She will also appear in Farhan Akhtar’s buddy film Jee Le Zaraa alongside Priyanka Chopra & Katrina Kaif.
Other work:
Along with acting she performed playback singing for the song ‘Sooha Saaha in movie Highway. A. R. Rahman was the composer of that song, he invited Alia for his music school for training.
She also sang the unplugged version of ‘Samjhawan’ with composers Sharib-Toshi for Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya in 2014. She sang an alternate version of ‘Ikk Kudi’ for the movie Udta Punjab with her co-star Dosanjh.
Alia Bhatt performed at the Filmfare, Screen and Stardust award ceremonies. In a stage show in Hong Kong, she participated alongside Varun Dhawan & Sidharth Malhotra.
With Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, Aditya Roy Kapur, Shraddha Kapoor & Huma Qureshi, she performed at charity event in 2013.
That event was organized to raise funds for flood-affected victims of Uttrakhand. Dor the ‘Dream Team 2016’ she performed in various cities of US alongside Dhawan, Malhotra, Roy Kapur, Katrina Kaif, Parineeti Chopra & singer Badshah.
Alia Bhatt took part in a campaign for PETA to raise awareness on homeless animals in 2013. She launched an ecological initiative on the name CoExist to raise awareness about the welfare of street animals in 2017.
Next year, she collaborated with Facebook live for a campaign named Find your Green for environmentalism.
In 2014, she designed her own clothing brand for women for online fashion portal Jabong.com. In 2018 she again launched her own line of handbags for VIP Industries.

The Indian edition of GQ featured her among the 50 most influential young people of the nation in 2018-19. It credited her for “striking a balance between big-budget, all-star blowouts and more script-oriented films”.

Controversies:
- She participated in an extravaganza in Uttar pradesh’s saifai village in 2014. It was organized by Samajwadi Party. At that time Muzzafarnagar riots took place. Later she apologized for that & told that she was not much politically aware.
- After appearing the chat show ‘Koffee with Karan’, she was known as beauty without brain. As she told that Prithvi Raj Chauhan was Indian Prime Minister.
- She was heavily trolled & criticized for prompting nepotism. After the suicide of Sushant Singh Rajput, along with Alia, Karan Johar, Ekta Kapoor, Sanjay Leela Bhansali & Salman Khan were criticized for nepotism in Bollywood.
