“My journey at Apeejay School was nothing short of transformative,” says Dr. Kunal Mehta, former student of Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg
By Mahima Gupta: Dr. Kunal Mehta, a distinguished alumnus of Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, returns to his roots as both a parent and a guiding light for his daughter, Saira Mehta, who is currently studying in UKG at the same esteemed institution.
Having completed his matriculation in 1991, Dr. Mehta has always carried forward the values instilled during his school days, particularly the principles of discipline, patriotism, and dedication.
His illustrious journey has been marked by significant achievements, including being honoured by the Punjab Government with the “Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh State Youth Award” for his social welfare contributions and being declared a “Star Blood Donor.”
Professionally, he is a Visiting Professor at Yogyakarta State University, Indonesia and attributes much of his success to the guidance and values instilled by his teachers at Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg.
Can you tell us about your journey at Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, and how it shaped who you are today?
My journey at Apeejay School was nothing short of transformative. From my matriculation in 1991 to now, I have always felt a strong connection with the values and teachings that the school instilled in me.
Teachers like Mr. Dubey and Mr. Kohli helped build a sense of discipline and dedication, which remains crucial in my professional life as an assistant professor in history today. The experiences and friendships I formed at the school continue to enrich my life.
What inspired you to enroll your daughter, Saira, in the same school?
The decision was deeply personal. I vividly remember the block and the classroom where I studied. It was a dream come true when my daughter was admitted to the same school and class where I once studied.
Seeing her in the same environment has brought back cherished memories, and I feel fortunate that she is receiving the same care, values, and discipline that I did. The teacher-in-charge who taught me in fifth grade is still here, which reinforces the sense of continuity and tradition.
How has your daughter’s experience been at Apeejay School so far?
Saira started in Nursery, and I have seen remarkable growth in her. Her vocabulary, confidence, and overall personality have flourished. The school’s focus on play-based learning ensures she enjoys the process rather than feeling burdened by studies.
The extracurricular activities complement her academic journey, helping her develop holistically. It’s heartening to see her not just enjoying school but excelling in various areas.
In what ways has your time at the school influenced your professional life as a history professor?
My time at the school instilled a love for history and a sense of responsibility towards the nation. Though I wasn’t initially strong in academics, my teachers’ encouragement and support played a pivotal role in shaping my career.
Today, as an assistant professor specialising in world history, ancient, modern, and medieval India, I teach UPSC and state-level students. My students continue to excel, and I always attribute my success to the values of discipline, nationalism, and selfless service that Apeejay School imparted.
How do you perceive Apeejay School’s evolution in the past few decades?
Apeejay School has always adapted to the changing times, ensuring that it remains relevant in a world that is constantly evolving.
While other institutions have struggled to keep pace with technological advancements, this education institute has excelled in incorporating modern methods while retaining its core values. This ability to blend tradition with modernity gives the school a unique edge.
What message would you like to convey to the current and future generations of Apeejay Education students?
My advice would be to cherish the values of discipline, patriotism, and dedication that Apeejay School instills. These qualities are the foundation for success, not just in academics but in life.
Always aim to serve your community selflessly and stay grounded to the traditions that make Apeejay School the great institution it is.
Excel in your chosen fields, and remember to give back to society. It is this ethos that earned me recognition, such as the “Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh State Youth Award,” and it’s a testament to the values our school imparts.
