We’ll now take a look at Anil Ambani biography, success story, failures and what he’s up to now!
Anil Ambani is an Indian businessman and chairman of Reliance Group, who has a net worth of $40 billion.
He was born on June 4, 1959. He is the son of Kokilaben and Dhirubhai Ambani. His father Dhirubhai was a very famous Indian entrepreneur who founded the company Reliance Industries.
Growing up in India, he studied at the Scottish Church College in Calcutta where he completed his graduation with degrees in Physics and Electrical Engineering.
From there he went to Stanford University for post-graduate studies before setting up Reliance Industries Limited or RIL with his brother Mukesh Ambani‘s help after their father Dhirubhai died from cancer when he was 28 years old.
When he was only 18 years old he left for Mumbai where his father had started a textile business in 1956.
Eventually this company would be renamed to Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and would go on to become one of India’s top ten largest companies by revenue today.”
Anil Ambani is the second-generation Indian business tycoon, who heads Reliance ADA Group. formed after the demerger from RIL. Reliance Industries Limited headed by Mukesh Ambani.
After college Anil Ambani started working for his father’s company Reliance Industries. He worked there for about two years before leaving to start his own business ventures.
In 1981 Anil Ambani founded the company Reliance Infocomm which was later renamed as Reliance Communications Limited (RCom). Rcom is a company that deals with providing mobile telephone services, cable broadband internet service and VOIP.
Fall from grace
In the early 2000’s Anil Ambani was in some financial trouble. His father Dhirubhai had died of a heart attack after his Reliance Industries’ share prices had gotten low so he could not bail him out anymore.
In 2005 however things turned around when TATAs son Akshay sold their shares to Vodafone for $11 billion!
This helped give Anil Ambani back all the money lost from when his companies were going under due to lower than normal share prices by giving them much needed capital.
He was a driving force behind the company’s aggressive growth, which saw it become one of India’s largest conglomerates.
However, in 2008 armed with debt totaling $32 billion, Anil’s empire crumbled and he was forced to sell assets and businesses to pay down the debt.
Today, Anil is a shadow of his former self – a lesson in how quickly fortunes can change in the volatile world of business.
Today Rcom has over 150 million customers and its stock increased almost 200% since January 2016.
