Anil Ambani, one of the most celebrated Indian businessmen, had a meteoric rise to success. He was considered one of the richest men in India, but his fortune soon dwindled and he declared bankruptcy in 2019.

Anil Ambani is an Indian businessman and chairman of Reliance Group, who has a net worth of $40 billion.

He was born on June 4, 1959. He is the son of Kokilaben and Dhirubhai Ambani. His father Dhirubhai was a very famous Indian entrepreneur who founded the company Reliance Industries.

Growing up in India, he studied at the Scottish Church College in Calcutta where he completed his graduation with degrees in Physics and Electrical Engineering.

From there he went to Stanford University for post-graduate studies before setting up Reliance Industries Limited or RIL with his brother Mukesh Ambani‘s help after their father Dhirubhai died from cancer when he was 28 years old.

When he was only 18 years old he left for Mumbai where his father had started a textile business in 1956.

Eventually this company would be renamed to Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and would go on to become one of India’s top ten largest companies by revenue today.”

Entrepreneurial Journey

After college Anil Ambani started working for his father’s company Reliance Industries. He worked there for about two years before leaving to start his own business ventures.

In 1981 Anil Ambani founded the company Reliance Infocomm which was later renamed as Reliance Communications Limited (RCom). Rcom is a company that deals with providing mobile telephone services, cable broadband internet service and VOIP.

Fall from grace

In the early 2000’s Anil Ambani was in some financial trouble. His father Dhirubhai had died of a heart attack after his Reliance Industries’ share prices had gotten low so he could not bail him out anymore.

In 2005 however things turned around when TATAs son Akshay sold their shares to Vodafone for $11 billion!

This helped give Anil Ambani back all the money lost from when his companies were going under due to lower than normal share prices by giving them much needed capital.

Dhirubhai Ambani: The journey from ₹15000 to becoming a billionaire

He was a driving force behind the company’s aggressive growth, which saw it become one of India’s largest conglomerates.

However, in 2008 armed with debt totaling $32 billion, Anil’s empire crumbled and he was forced to sell assets and businesses to pay down the debt.

Today, Anil is a shadow of his former self – a lesson in how quickly fortunes can change in the volatile world of business.

Today Rcom has over 150 million customers and its stock increased almost 200% since January 2016.

Reliance MediaWorks Ltd

Anil Ambani also ventured into the film industry. In 2003 he founded a production company called Adlabs Films which was later renamed as Reliance MediaWorks Ltd.

The first movie they produced was called LOC Kargil and it released in 2003. Some of the other movies that this production company has made include Dhoom, Drona, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and Rangeela Raja.

Prior to the demerger, following in their father Dhirubhai Ambani’s footsteps, Anil Ambani and Mukesh Ambani expanded the business empire to include industries such as telecommunications,  textiles, petrochemicals, power, petroleum, and more.

Anil Ambani is currently the head of a host of companies including Reliance Communications,  Reliance Capital, Reliance Power and Reliance Infrastructure. He is a major partner of “DreamWorks”, a Steven Spielberg’s production company.

For business achievements, Anil Ambani has received many awards

  • ‘Best role model’ honor by ‘India Today’ magazine.
  • The Entrepreneur of the Decade Award’ by the Bombay Management Association
  • ‘the CEO of the Year’ 2004

Recently, the shares of his Reliance Communications saw a major wipeout. Currently, Anil Ambani is the 33rd richest Indian with a net worth of $3.2 billion, According to the Forbes billionaire list.

Anil Ambani is married to Tina Munim who is an actress turned businesswoman. They have two children together named Anmol and Ananya.
