An interview with Aniruddha V. Nafrey, founder and Principal Architect of Arriva Designs, a renowned Mumbai-based architectural and interior design firm

In this interview, we speak with Aniruddha V. Nafrey, the visionary founder and Principal Architect of Arriva Designs, a leading architectural and interior design firm based in Mumbai.

With a passion for innovative design and a commitment to sustainability, Aniruddha has transformed countless spaces, blending functionality with aesthetic appeal.

Can you tell us about your journey into architecture? What inspired you to pursue this field?

Aniruddha V. Nafrey: Architecture has always been close to my heart. Growing up, I was captivated by buildings and structures, but one that profoundly impacted me was the Portuguese Church, where I studied during my school years.

Designed by the legendary Ar. Charles Correa, that structure left a lasting impression on me and I was continuously fascinated by its design, form and functionality.

Another iconic work of this visionary architect that inspired me deeply was the Kanchanjunga Apartments.

Both these structures shaped my perspective and played a significant role in shaping my passion for architecture.

Pursuing architecture after 12th grade felt like a natural choice. With a strong technical aptitude, a keen eye for design, and strong drawing skills, I was always drawn to architecture and immersive design.

Buildings have always inspired me, fueling my drive to create and contribute to the field.

You’re known for creating timeless, functional, and aesthetic spaces. How would you describe your architectural philosophy?

Aniruddha V. Nafrey: Driven by a passion for blending functionality with aesthetics, Arriva Designs has always embarked on a journey to create timeless spaces that inspire and enhance the human experience.

Our mission is to deliver exceptional design solutions that surpass client expectations while upholding the highest quality and sustainability standards.

We aim to create structures and spaces that fulfil functional requirements, evoke emotions, and enrich lives.

Can you walk us through your design process? From concept to completion, how do you approach each project?

Aniruddha V. Nafrey: At Arriva Designs, we approach the design process with meticulous attention to detail, in-depth research and conceptualisation. Client collaboration is at the heart of our process. We ensure that their vision is translated into reality.

Throughout our projects, we uphold the highest standards of craftsmanship and functionality through rigorous quality assurance measures, regular inspections, and continuous evaluation.

We push the boundaries of design while ensuring functionality. Our team of highly skilled professionals bring diverse expertise, enabling us to deliver innovative solutions that resonate with our client’s expectations and make a lasting impact in a competitive industry.

Arriva Designs has worked on both residential and commercial spaces. Is there a particular type of project that you find more rewarding or challenging?

Aniruddha V. Nafrey: Our design portfolio encompasses a wide range of projects including residential, commercial, hospitality, and institutional spaces.

We specialize in creating bespoke designs tailored to each client’s insights and preferences. The process of presenting a unique perspective on any project can be rewarding as well as challenging.

One of the most challenging projects I worked on was designing a four-floor office for the Gemological Institute of America. The project involved cutting through existing slabs to create interconnecting staircases and install lifts, which was no small task.

The timeline was incredibly tight, and managing the various aspects of the project added to its complexity. Coordinating the slab cutting, ensuring compliance with municipal authorities, and addressing client requirements— were all my responsibilities.

However, once the project was completed, it was immensely satisfying to receive appreciation from our American counterparts, which made all the effort worthwhile.

Despite the challenges, this project taught me the importance of meticulous planning, effective communication, and staying composed under pressure.

How does Arriva Designs incorporate sustainability and add a meaningful impact to its projects?

Aniruddha V. Nafrey: Architects are often seen as individuals who can bring about change. People look at us as creative professionals capable of making a meaningful impact on daily life.

We believe architects hold the power to design spaces that are harmonious with nature and enhance the quality of life. We can create environments through thoughtful design blended with sustainability and a contemporary approach.

A notable example of our sustainable design is the Vande Mataram Museum, Bhuj, where we carefully selected materials such as red sandstone, marble, and brass.

This combination not only creates a timeless aesthetic but also supports an eco-friendly structure, reflecting our commitment to sustainability.

What advice would you give to young architects and interior designers who are just starting their careers today?

Aniruddha V. Nafrey: My advice to aspiring architects is to stay passionate and dedicated to your craft. Always keep learning, as architecture is a constantly evolving field.

Find inspiration in the world around you—whether it’s nature, culture, or history—and use that to create meaningful, impactful designs. Be patient, as great architecture takes time, effort, and commitment.

Design with empathy, always considering the people who will use the spaces you create and striving to enhance their lives. Most importantly never stop challenging yourself and pushing the boundaries of your creativity.

Is there a project you’ve worked on that you feel particularly proud of, or one that holds personal significance to you?

Aniruddha V. Nafrey: When we completed the Vande Mataram Museum in Bhuj, a tribute to India’s freedom struggle, it was incredibly rewarding to see over 2,000 visitors experience it.

The structure we designed had a profound effect on them, sparking reflections on India’s journey to freedom and connecting them to that historical era.

Seeing the emotions on their faces as they engaged with the space was deeply fulfilling—it was clear that the design resonated with them, beautifully expressing the essence of India’s freedom struggle, narrating a tale of courage, unity and patriotism.

As we conclude our conversation, Aniruddha V. Nafrey’s insights into the evolving landscape of architecture inspire us to rethink our environments. His dedication to creating meaningful spaces continues to shape the future of design in Mumbai and beyond.
