Anupam Kher Biography & Life Story
Anupam Kher is an Indian actor and former Chairman of film and Television Institute of India. He performed in over 500 films in Hindi language & many plays.
Anupam Kher received two National Film Awards & eight Filmfare Awards. Anupam Kher received the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for his performance in Saaransh in 1984.
Anupam Kher is having the record for winning the Filmfare Award for Best Comedian five times. They were for Ram Lakhan in 1989, Lamhe in 1991, Khel in 1992, Darr in 1993 & Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge in 1995.
For Dassy in 1989 & Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara in 2005, he received the National Film Award for Special Mention twice. In 1988, he got the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Vijay.
Along with Hindi films, he also appeared in international films like Golden Globe nominated Bend It Like Beckham in 2002, Anq Lee’s Golden Lion- winning Lust, Caution in 2007, David O.Russell’s Oscar winning Silver Linings Playbook in 2012 & Antony Maras’s Hotel Mumbai in 2019.
In 2018, he received a BAFTA nomination for his supporting role in the British Sitcom The Boy With The Topknot.
Previously, he served as the Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification & the National School of Drama in India.
In 2004, the Government of India honored Kher with the Padma Shri & in 2016, he was awarded with Padma Bhushan for his contribution in the field of cinema & arts.
In October 2017, he was appointed as a Chairperson of the Film & Television Institute of India (FTII). It was controversial for giving support to Bhartiya Janata Parti (BJP) & considering the endorsement of Hindutva ideology & prolonged absence from FTII.
Anupam Kher resigned as the Chairperson of the FTII after a year due to his work commitments for the American TV show New Amsterdam.
Early & Personal life of Anupam Kher:
Kher was born on 7th March 1955 in a Kashmiri Pandit family in Shimla. His father’s name is Pushkar Nath Kher & mother’s name is Dulari Kher.
His father was a clerk in the forest department of Himachal Pradesh & his mother was home maker. He completed his school education from D.A.V. School in Simla.
He started studing economics at Government College, Sanjauli in Shimla. Unfortunately, he dropped out for studding Indian theatre at Punjab University, Chandigarh.
Even he slept on the railway in Mumbai platform for a month during his struggling period.
Kher graduated from the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi in 1978.
Anupam Kher graduated from National School of Drama (NSD) New Delhi in 1978. For a small part of his directorial debut movie Sheeshay Ka Ghar, he tought drama in Raj Bisaria’s Bhartendu Natya Akadami in Lucknow.
He married actress Kirron Kher in 1985. She is a Member of Parliament (BJP) from Chandigarh. Actor Sikander Kher is Anupam’s stepson.
Kher was appointed as the goodwill ambassador of the Pratham Education Foundation. It strives to improve children’s education in India.
Anupam Kher is passionate supporter of BJP & Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He always spreads positive message about Kashmiri Pandits.
Anupam Kher was awarded an honourary doctorate degree in Philosophy of Hindu studies by the Hindu University of America on 20th September 2021.
Anupam Kher Career:
Kher played a role of a retired middle-class man in Saaransh at the age of 29 in 1984. As per Kher, he lost his hair at young age, so his first role was of a 65-year-old man at the age of 29.
Eventually, he hosted TV shows like Say Na Something To Anupam Uncle, Sawaal Dus Crore Ka, Lead India & The Anupam Kher Show-Kucch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai.

Acting career:
1984 to 1988:
Anupam Kher made his acting debut in Bollywood, with the Mahesh Bhatt-directed movie Sarransh. He won number of awards for that film including the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
He played the role of Madhuri Dixit’s father Shyamlal in N. Chandra’s action thriller Tezaab in 1988. Tezzab was the top grossing film of 1988.
1989-99:
Kher became more popular during 1989-99. He acted in many films like Ram Lakhan & Daddy. Both Daddy & Ram Lakhan him several awards like National Film Award – Special Mention and a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance.
Latter, he garnered his first Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role along with Kaushik. He is also known as the Filmfare Award for Best Comedian.
Later in 1989, he acted in the sequal of Nagina with the title of Nigahen: Nagina Part II with Sridevi & Sunny Deol. He acted in Yash Chopra’s chandni with Sridevi, Rishi Kapoor & Vinod Khanna.
In Vidu Vinod Chopra’s Parinda, he acted with Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff & Nana Patekar.
His final film of the year was ChalBaaz alongside Sridevi, Sunny Deol & Rajinikanth. In 1990, he acted in Indra Kumar’s Dil with Aamir Khan & Madhuri Dixit.
For Dil, he received a Best Supporting Actor nomination at Filmfare. Again in 1991, he acted in Yash Chopra’s romantic drama Lamhe with Sridevi & Anil Kapoor. Despite the poor performance of Lamhe, Kher received his second Filmfare award as Best Comedian.
The following year, he acted in Beta along with Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit & Aruna Irani. Later that year, he received second consecutive Filmfare Best Comedian Award for his movie Khel.
Again he played with Shah Rukh Khan, Sunny Deol & Juhi Chawla in Yash Chopra’s Darr in 1993 as Juhi’s brother. Kher received a fourth and a third consecutive Best Comedian at Filmfare.
In addition to other awards, the movie won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
In 1994, he acted in Laadla alongside Sridevi, Anil Kapoor, Aruna Irani, Raveena Tandon & Farida Jalal.
Later that year, he starred alongside Salman Khan & Madhuri Dixit in Sooraj R. Barjatya’s Hum Aapke Hain Kaun…!
Eventually, he won another Best Supporting Actor nomination at Filmfare. It was proved his second consecutive movie to win the National Film Award for Best Popular Film.
In 1995, he starred in Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge with Shah Rukh Khan & Kajol. It was his third consecutive film to win the National Film Award for Best Popular Film.
In 1998, he acted in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai with Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukerji, and Archana Puran Singh.
It garnered him another Best Comedian nomination at Filmfare. In 1999, he acted in Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hai. Kher was awarded the best actor at New York city International Film Festival for his Performance in a short film named Happy Birthday.
Other Ventures:
Anupam Kher released his first book ‘The Best Thing About You is You! It was best-seller. On 5th August 2019, he published his biography ‘Lessons Life Taught Me Unknowingly’ by Penguin Random House.
He wrote ‘Your Best Day Is Today!’ in 2020. It was based on his experiences of COVID-19 crisis.
He presented a poem written by Lucknow based poet Pankaj Prasun on his father’s 9th death anniversary. He posted it on social media.
Anupam Kher Controversies:
He was accused of threatening to ruin the career of a Bengali actress Rita Koira in 2017.
He was involved in a verbal spat with actor Naseeruddin Shah.
