An interview with Apeksha Niranjan, International Bharatnatyam Dancer, Artist, Choreographer and Teacher
In this captivating interview, we explore the world of Apeksha Niranjan, an acclaimed International Bharatnatyam dancer, choreographer, and teacher.
Apeksha shares her journey through the art form, her creative inspirations, and her commitment to preserving and innovating traditional dance for future generations.
Can you share your journey into the world of Bharatanatyam? What inspired you to pursue this art form professionally?
Apeksha Niranjan: What initially drew me to Bharatnatyam was its great ability to convey stories through a perfect blend of rhythm, expression, and grace. From a young age, I was enthralled by the intricate footwork, the eloquent gestures, and the expressive use of the eyes.
My love for dance is deeply rooted in the way it allows me to communicate emotions and narratives without words, transporting both myself and the audience to another world.
My journey in mastering Bharatnatyam has been one of commitment, discipline, and continuous learning. Each stage of this journey has deepened my appreciation for the rich cultural heritage and intricate technique of the art form.
Through years of rigorous practice and guidance from my gurus, I have not only honed my skills but also realized the transformative power of dance. It’s a journey that constantly challenges and motivates me, and one that I am profoundly grateful for.
You are known as ‘The Queen of Expressions.’ Can you elaborate on what this title means to you and how it reflects in your performances?
Apeksha Niranjan: I am extremely grateful for this title. Bharatnatyam is a way to express my feelings, so I just go with the flow and gel well with the character by articulating the thoughts behind the composition.
It’s my sincere effort to express the inner thoughts through my expressions. The audience’s appreciation gives me the energy to do something better.
How do you see Bharatanatyam evolving in contemporary times, especially in a global context?
Apeksha Niranjan: The evolution of Bharatanatyam has proved to be a dynamic and vibrant that embraces both tradition and innovation.
My first International Bharatnatyam dance performance was in Sri Lanka, where I had strictly presented a traditional Bharatnatyam margam, whereas now I will be performing Bharatanatyam recitals in Poland which are based on polish folk music, polish culture, etc.
Through these years I have learned about the cultures being very different but still having similar values, ethics, goals.
I have just sculpted my choreographies and recitals for the better understanding and enjoyment of my esteemed audience.
How do you engage with audiences from different cultural backgrounds during your performances?
Apeksha Niranjan: Today, we need to showcase performances based on people’s liking and understanding. We should take up concepts that resonate with the audience. Whenever I took up international presentations, luckily, I gauged overwhelming response and bright engagement.
I saw many Europeans watching Gregorian chants with teary eyes. The response from the Polish audience was also rewarding when they said that the real meaning of many Polish Folk Songs they could watch on the stage which was never explored by them.
Do you also teach Bharatanatyam? If so, what is your approach to teaching this art form to students of varying skill levels?
Apeksha Niranjan: Bharatnatyam is an artform full of discipline, tradition, culture, values, etc. As a student the first thing one learns is the Namaskaram. It is a student’s first lesson, which begins their journey. I tell our students stories and tell them about various mythological beings.
I teach our senior students newer recitals, from extremely traditional pieces to folk pieces. Every year we organize a dance festival for our students to showcase what they have learnt throughout the year which makes the students motivated to learn and perform.
As an artist, what has been the most rewarding experience in your journey so far?
Apeksha Niranjan: Every day is a day for learning. As a student, teacher, and performer, I have learnt a lot. Not just that but meeting different people and exploring new concepts and ideas that also created a difference in my dance journey.
What advice would you give to young dancers aspiring to pursue a career in Bharatanatyam?
Apeksha Niranjan: My advice to young dancers aspiring to pursue Bharatanatyam professionally is to prioritize dedicated and disciplined practice. Seek guidance from a knowledgeable guru who can impart both theoretical and technical aspects of the art form.
Focus on expressing emotions authentically through your performances and maintain physical and mental fitness to sustain the demands of dance. Learn your art thoroughly first. Commit to thoroughly studying it rather than fleeting exploration.
Embrace innovation within the framework of tradition, and cultivate patience as mastery takes time. Ultimately, let Bharatanatyam become ingrained within you, enriching your life and artistic journey.
Dedicate yourself to disciplined practice, understand the theoretical and technical aspects, focus on expression, stay physically and mentally fit, learn from others, network, perform widely, innovate within tradition, and continuously educate yourself to succeed in Bharatnatyam professionally.
Apeksha Niranjan’s dedication to Bharatnatyam shines through her artistry and teaching. As she continues to inspire students and audiences alike, her passion for dance not only preserves tradition but also paves the way for new interpretations, ensuring that this beautiful art form thrives in the modern world.
