Apple Contractors In India Provided Direct Employment To 50,000 People; Samsung’s Noida Unit Employs Over 11,000 People

January 3, 2023: Apple contractors in India provided direct employment to 50,000 people; Samsung’s Noida unit employs over 11,000 people

New Delhi: As many as 50,000 direct jobs have been created by US tech giant Apple’s contract manufacturers and component suppliers in India since August last year when the Smartphone Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme came into force.

In addition to the number of direct jobs, Apple manufacturing could also create around 100,000 indirect jobs, according to government officials citing data submitted by the companies.

The PLI scheme requires the beneficiaries to submit job data to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on a quarterly basis.

Apart from Apple, South Korean company Samsung is also a beneficiary of the incentive scheme and employs over 11,500 people at its Noida unit.

According to government officials, iPhone maker Foxconn has created more than 40 percent of the jobs at the three Apple contract manufacturers.

The Economic Times quoted officials as saying that in the last 17 months, a few thousand direct jobs have been added by component and module providers, increasing the capacity of the Apple iPhone supply chain.

Experts believe that Apple can become the largest provider of blue-collar jobs in India’s fast-growing electronics sector through its contract manufacturers.

Apple-Tata joint manufacturing

The Tata Group, which has set up a 500-acre unit in Hosur to manufacture components for smartphones, including iPhones, employs around 10,000 workers. This number is expected to increase to 45,000 in the next 18 months.

The Production-Linked Incentive Scheme was first released in April 2020 but became operational from August 1, 2020 after the guidelines were notified.

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been extended by a year, making August 2021 an effective start date for Apple’s contract manufacturers.

Currently, Apple manufacturers make iPhone 11, 12, 13 and 14 in India for the domestic market and for exports. The production of iPhone 14 in India started in September 2022.
