An exclusive interview with Archana Surana, Founder of Arch College and Design Business, (formerly known as ARCH Academy of Design)
In the realm of design education, Archana Surana stands as a beacon of inspiration and innovation. With a distinguished career spanning over 24 years, she has been a guiding force in shaping the landscape of design education.
As the visionary Founder and Director of ARCH College of Design & Business, formerly known as ARCH Academy of Design, located in the vibrant city of Jaipur, Archana Surana has carved a niche for herself and her institution in the field.
ARCH College is not merely an educational institution; it is a testament to Archana’s unwavering commitment to providing specialized and industry-relevant design education. Under her leadership, ARCH has become a hub for nurturing professionals and entrepreneurs, equipping them with the skills needed to navigate the dynamic intersection of design and business.
Through a diverse range of Undergraduate and Post Graduate programs, complemented by international and national certifications, ARCH College reflects Archana’s foresight into the evolving needs of the design world.
Can you share the story behind the founding of Arch College and Design Business? What inspired you to start a design college?
Archana Surana: I was trained as a fashion designer and had a keen interest in textiles and colors. Over the years, I nurtured my sense of design and before the inception of ARCH, I served as an educator, teaching fashion for four years. I moved to the city of Jaipur in 1995, and I realized the huge potential for designers due to the flourishing indigenous crafts industry.
The jewellery industry had a wealth of gems and jewellery, along with people, resources, and experts contributing. At the same time the garment industry excelled in block printing, textiles, designs, and handicrafts of the future, with abundant resources and a substantial export market.
I noticed though that there was an absence of a design school or institution offering courses in these areas. There were only small boutique institutions providing short-term courses or polytechnics offering vocational courses.
Recognizing the potential for professional certificate and diploma programs with design at the center, I decided to start ARCH College in the year 2000, initially as the Arch Institute of Fashion Design, and offered courses in interiors, jewellery and fashion with a focus on high job orientation and meeting industry needs and demands.
As we progressed, we evolved into a higher education institution offering undergraduate programs in design, featuring three-year degree courses. In 2010, we expanded to four-year degree courses in design.
Today, we stand as a leading institution globally known for our undergraduate and postgraduate programs in design and business. Our master’s programs concentrate on design and entrepreneurship, while our undergraduate programs are interdisciplinary in nature, aiming to develop well-rounded individuals.
In a competitive landscape, what do you believe sets Arch College apart from other design colleges in India?
Archana Surana: At ARCH, our uniqueness lies in our focus on a global perspective and going beyond conventional design education through an interdisciplinary approach to learning, and ensuring hands-on industry experience.
Building on a dynamic awareness of the aspects and needs of the creative industry, a real-time collaboration is maintained and nurtured through the projects integrated into the classrooms based on some of their real time design briefs.
