Mohak Singla

Mohak Singla, who is pursuing BBA (Honours) in Marketing from Apeejay Stya University, Gurugram, says compulsory internships and skill enhancement events and workshops are extensively integrated in ASU curriculum.

Mohak is a first-year student of BBA (Honours) in Marketing. The 18-year-old opted for Commerce stream after class 10 and scored an impressive 93.6 percent in class 12 Boards. In a candid interview, Mohak explains the reason for picking ASU, the significance of industry-focused education, why he wants to become an entrepreneur, and more. Edited excerpts:

What did you choose ASU for higher education?

After class 12, I visited a lot of colleges in Gurugram and Delhi. Based on my research, I came to know that ASU is the first Liberal Arts University in India and it follows a trans-disciplinary approach.

It allows students to study a larger range of subjects, without compromising on their core degree/discipline.

They expose students to real work environments and organise skill enhancement events, workshops and webinars. Unlike other Universities, which offer internships in the third-year, ASU offers paid internships from the first-year itself.

For instance, I have already bagged an internship in my first-year. Internships equip you with the right technical skills, provide valuable exposure to the challenges of a work environment, help you figure out your interests, create new interests, and connect you to industry professionals.

For someone like me who wants to become an entrepreneur such practical opportunities are priceless.

ASU provides a perfect environment to develop an entrepreneurial mindset. Moreover, my cousin who is an ASU alumna also advised me to go with ASU. The university also provides counseling for students who are a little confused as to which course is right for them.

Why do you want to become an entrepreneur?

Entrepreneurship allows you the opportunity to shape your own destiny. Some people think of entrepreneurial types as inventors; given a blank canvas, they can come up with a product or service that can set the market on fire.

However, entrepreneurs are problem-solvers. They first identify a key problem in the market, then work to solve that problem.

Today, we need entrepreneurs who work with a broad outlook to solve societal, business and technological problems and create an environment that brings opportunities to thousands of people.

According to you, what are the career opportunities in marketing?

Marketing is used in every industry as you can’t sell a product without it. Hence, there are unlimited opportunities.

If you have good communication, creativity and problem-solving skills and you pay attention to detail then Marketing is the perfect industry for you.

There are career opportunities in Market Research, Brand Management, Advertising, Promotions, and Public Relations among others.

Digital marketing is also a great career as the internet has revolutionised the way we communicate. You can also do a Masters in Marketing.

I am glad that the faculty at ASU also has experience in teaching post graduate students, hence, can provide a good foundation for advanced studies.
