Who is Sundar Pichai?
Pichai Sundararajan, Sundar Pichai is the chief executive officer (CEO) of Alphabet Inc. and its subsidiary Google LLC, computer engineer and an Indian American business executive.
In 2004, Sunder Pichai joined Google as the president of the product management executive. He takes charge of Gears, Gadgets, Google Search toolbar, Pack etc.
He rose to become Google’s Product Chief and takes charge of Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc.
Sundar becomes Google’s CEO in 2015 and he additionally became CEO of Alphabet Inc in December 2019.
Early life & Childhood
Pichai Sundararajan, also known as, Sundar Pichai was born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu on June 10, 1972, to Lakshmi and Regunatha Pichai and hails from a middle-class Tamil family.
His father, Regunatha Pichai was an electrical engineer at General Electric Company, GEC, UK-based industrial conglomerate.
His mother, Lakshmi was a stenographer before having Sundar and his younger brother.
Sundar Pichai grew up in a two-room apartment in Chennai.
He had never experienced the luxury of watching television or traveling by car in his childhood. Sunder belongs to a lower middle-class family. His father also had an electrical components manufacturing plant.
Personal life
Pichai’s interests include cricket and football. Sunder Pichai married to a chemical engineer from Kota, Rajasthan, named Anjali Pichai, born into a middle-class family, whom many days play a pivotal role in all his endeavours.
The couple met as classmates and became good friends when they were in the first year of their engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. The duo has two children and currently lives in Bay Area San Francisco.
Education: An Excellent Student
Pichai Sundararajan completed schooling in Jawahar Vidyalaya, a Central Board of Secondary Education school in Chennai.
Sundar had a remarkable skill of memorizing and remembering numbers. Sundar completed the Class XII from Vana Vani School in the Indian Institute of Technology Madras.
Pichai obtained his degree in metallurgical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Kharagpur.
Sundar Pichai is a distinguished alumnus from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
He won a scholarship from Stanford University to study semiconductor physics and materials science.
He later went on to complete his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Upon graduating, he migrated to the US in 1993 and he initially planned to pursue a Ph.D. from Stanfordand and marked on an academic career.
He completed M.S in material sciences and engineering from Stanford University. Pichai received his Master of Business Administration – MBA degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
He named a Siebel Scholar and a Palmer Scholar, respectively at Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Career: The Google Journey
Sunder appointed as a management consultant at McKinsey Company and worked in engineering and product management.
Later he joined Google in 2004 and launched a free mail service called Gmail. In Google, he led the innovation and product management efforts for a suite of Google’s client software products.
He was responsible for Google Chrome OS, Google Chrome as well as being largely responsible for Google Drive.
In 2007, he takes over Gmail, a free email service developed by Google and Google Maps development.
Pichai leads to the launch of Google Chrome in 2008.
Sundar Pichai gave a demonstration of Chrome OS; the Chromebook on November 19, 2009, released for trial and testing in 2011 and released to the public in 2012.
Pichai introduced the new video format, WebM by Google and announced the open sourcing of the new video codec VP8.
Sundar added Android to the list of Google products that he oversees on March 13, 2013.
On August 10, 2015, Sundar Pichai becomes the next CEO of Google after previously appointed Product Chief.
Pichai stepped into the new position at the completion of the formation of Alphabet Inc. on October 24, 2015. Alphabet Inc. is the new holding company for Google.
