Cabinet Approves Scheme to Boost Grain Storage Capacity in Co-op Sector
May 31, 2023: In a significant move aimed at enhancing India’s food security and storage infrastructure, the Union Cabinet has approved a scheme to boost grain storage capacity in the cooperative sector.
This scheme, introduced with the objective of modernizing and expanding storage facilities, is expected to address the challenges associated with post-harvest management and ensure the efficient storage of agricultural produce.
The scheme aims to augment the existing grain storage capacity by providing financial assistance and technical support to cooperative societies, farmer producer organizations (FPOs), and other entities engaged in the storage and marketing of agricultural produce.
It seeks to promote the establishment of modern storage infrastructure, including silos, warehouses, and cold storage facilities, in order to reduce post-harvest losses and enhance the overall value chain.
The approval of this scheme by the Cabinet highlights the government’s commitment to strengthening the cooperative sector and empowering farmers.
It recognizes the vital role played by cooperative societies and FPOs in agricultural operations, particularly in the storage and marketing of grains.
The scheme’s financial assistance will be provided in the form of subsidies and loans at favorable interest rates, enabling cooperative societies and FPOs to invest in advanced storage facilities.
The assistance will also cover the cost of related infrastructure such as transportation, handling equipment, and quality testing facilities, thereby ensuring a comprehensive approach to grain storage and management.
By increasing the grain storage capacity in the cooperative sector, the scheme aims to mitigate post-harvest losses and improve food security.
It will enable farmers to store their produce in a safe and controlled environment, preventing spoilage, pest infestation, and quality deterioration.
This, in turn, will enhance farmers’ incomes and contribute to the overall growth and development of the agricultural sector.
Additionally, the scheme aligns with the government’s vision of doubling farmers’ incomes by promoting efficient storage and marketing practices.
By providing improved storage infrastructure, it will enable farmers to store their produce until they receive favorable prices, allowing them to make informed decisions regarding the sale of their crops.
The scheme is expected to create employment opportunities in rural areas, foster entrepreneurship, and promote inclusive growth.
It will encourage cooperative societies and FPOs to adopt modern technologies and best practices in grain storage, leading to higher efficiency, reduced wastage, and better market access for farmers.
The Cabinet’s approval of the scheme marks a significant step towards transforming the agricultural storage landscape in India.
It reflects the government’s proactive approach in addressing the challenges faced by farmers and ensuring the welfare of the agricultural community.
The scheme’s implementation is expected to bring about a positive impact on India’s food security, agricultural productivity, and overall economic growth.
