Chanchal Kataria, renowned celebrity makeup artist and founder of Muse Beauty, shares her journey of creativity and entrepreneurship. In this interview, she reveals her passion for beauty, industry insights, and how Muse Beauty is shaping new trends.
Can you share what inspired you to become a makeup artist and how your journey began in the beauty industry?
Chanchal Kataria: The fact that working in a beauty industry was never my plan during my initial days. I was getting ready to pursue a PhD in psychology. I decided to explore my creative side during a brief break from my studies, so I enrolled in a makeup course to learn SFX and color theory.
What began as a minor diversion became a transformative experience. Those few months fundamentally altered my professional trajectory and gave me access to a world I never would have thought possible.
How has your experience working with high-profile celebrities like Kirti Kulhari and Prateik Babbar shaped your approach to makeup artistry?
Chanchal Kataria: Every influencer and celebrity I’ve collaborated with has influenced me in some way. I’ve learned how to be quick, flexible, and composed under pressure from my work.
Because it’s such a big responsibility, there were always butterflies in my stomach, but I’ve been extremely fortunate to work with kind, considerate, and respectful people. Because of all of this, the experience is not only thrilling but also extremely satisfying.
Muse Beauty is unique in that it draws from your family’s legacy in brush manufacturing. How has this heritage influenced the products you create today?
Chanchal Kataria: Makeup brushes were a part of my upbringing. I frequently went to our factory to observe the artisans meticulously polishing each handle and bristle.
I witnessed my father and grandfather’s pride, diligence, and accuracy with every brush. “If your name is on it, the quality must be the best,” they would always tell me.
My entire vision was shaped by that advice. I have a family history of making brushes, and Muse Beauty India is my way of preserving that heritage by creating premium, effective brushes for Indian skin.
What challenges did you face transitioning from being a celebrity makeup artist to also becoming a product entrepreneur?
Chanchal Kataria: Working hard was not a problem for me because I was always familiar with long hours. Learning the business side manufacturing, supply chains, packaging, budgeting, marketing, and testing was the actual challenge.
At first, juggling two jobs which require a lot of concentration and time was overwhelming. Nonetheless, after nearly a year, I’ve figured out how to create a system that makes it easy for me to juggle both responsibilities.
Which Muse Beauty product are you most proud of, and why?
Chanchal Kataria: I once thought that “Made in India” might not be achievable after manufacturing numerous samples. However, everything was altered by the last batch of samples. The outcome of our angular foundation brush was flawless.
That same sample brush is still in use today. The body brush is another one of my favorites since it’s one of our best-selling items, very distinctive, and useful.
What role do you think makeup brushes and tools play in achieving a flawless look compared to the products themselves?
Chanchal Kataria: Even the finest, most expensive foundation cannot perform well if you use a very affordable brush to apply it. The product and the tools you use have an equal impact on the outcome of your makeup.
Good tools and makeup go hand in hand; it’s really a 50/50 partnership. For this reason, if you want the best finish, investing in high-quality tools is essential
What advice would you give to aspiring makeup artists and beauty entrepreneurs looking to carve out their niche?
Chanchal Kataria: My initial piece of recommendation would be to explore as much as you can in the field you wish to advance in. Discover what truly interests you by trying everything and exploring different areas.
Learn as much as you can, ask for advice, and interact with those who motivate you. Above all, never be afraid to improve your current skills or acquire new ones.
