Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to start CoffeeTotaler? 

I was born in Amritsar and belong to a business family with interest in hospitality sector also. Coffeetotaler was started by my daughter and me after sensing absence of good coffee makers in home kitchens.

After starting bean-to-cup coffee machines we realised that people are looking for good decaffeinated coffees as regular coffees can only be consumed in limit owing to high caffeine content.

How did you go about sourcing your coffee beans and establishing relationships with suppliers?

We source decaffeinated coffee beans from SWISS WATER, Canada which is best known company for its chemical-free patented process that retains natural flavours of coffee beans.

Our premium espresso offering is a blend of Brazilian walnut, washed Central American, wet-hulled Indonesian, Ethiopian Sidamo and Oceania varieties decaffeinated at Canada.

It was indeed difficult to convince SWISS WATER to appoint us as official importer for India as they choose only the best and fair businesses as their representatives.

Can you describe the process of developing your coffee blends? 

We sell coffee blends curated by top experts at SWISS WATER, Canada. Coffee beans are sourced from all across the globe, tested for taste and quality and then blend using scientific and human expertise. In addition we also do single origin coffees from places such as Colombia, Guatemala etc.

What makes them unique?

These are the most exotic coffees carefully selected by experts and brought to your homes by coffeetotaler.

What are your long-term goals for CoffeeTotaler?

We wish to break the myth that decaf coffee is tasteless. It is infact hard to distinguish from regular coffee and we are developing test kits for live demo of the caffeine content.  

We want to introduce people to decaf coffee in India for its long terms health benefits over regular coffee, also because health conditions such as hypertension, sleep disorder etc. are most prevalent in India.

We see people making informed choices in the coming years as to which coffee they should have based on health condition, wellness goals and also time of the day.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to enter the food and beverage industry?

I will advise young entrepreneurs, aspiring to start food and beverage business, to focus on health benefits of the product they wish to offer as it will not only give them good business but also sense of satisfaction to be doing something worthwhile for the society.
