Uvita, nestled beautifully in the Ballena Coast of Costa Rica, has a reputation. It’s not just the stunning whale’s tail-shaped beach or the regular sightings of humpback whales that bring this place to life; it’s also the intriguing mélange of American expats who now call this tropical paradise home.
During my recent sojourn to this coastal haven, I couldn’t help but notice the fascinating spectrum of American expats who have woven themselves into the local fabric. Let me introduce you to the eclectic mix I encountered and a few of the popular jobs in Costa Rica.
1. The “Eco-Warrior”
First on my list is the “Eco-Warrior”. These are individuals who’ve traded their corporate 9-to-5s to champion eco-causes in the lush heart of Uvita. With dreadlocked hair, hemp clothing, and reusable straws always at the ready, they’re on a mission.
Whether it’s running organic farms, promoting permaculture, or spearheading beach cleanups, they’re here, and they mean green business. They’ll give you an education on sustainability with every sip of their ethically-sourced, shade-grown coffee.
2. The “Forever Vacationer”
Next up, the “Forever Vacationer.” They came to Uvita on what was supposed to be a two-week vacation, and guess what? They never left. Often spotted at beach bars or local fiestas, they’re here for a good time, not a long time (or so they say).
With sun-kissed tans, surfboards perennially tucked under their arms, and an endless playlist of beach tunes, they’re on a mission to relive that vacation vibe, well, forever.
3. The “Retired and Rejuvenated”
Then we have our delightful seniors, the “Retired and Rejuvenated.” Having decided that Uvita’s perfect mix of sun, sea, and simplicity is better than any retirement home, they’re here and living their best lives.
Often seen taking leisurely morning walks, engaging in community events, or simply sipping on fresh pipa while lounging on their porch, they’ve traded in business suits for bathing suits and haven’t looked back since.
4. The “Digital Nomad”
The “Digital Nomad” tribe in Uvita is strong. Found primarily in cozy cafés with strong Wi-Fi, they’re often deeply engrossed in their MacBooks, designing websites, managing e-commerce stores, or penning the next bestseller.
They’ve mastered the art of balancing work with intermittent surf breaks and jungle hikes. If you ask them about their office, be prepared for them to point at the expansive ocean or lush rainforest surrounding them.
5. The “Holistic Healer”
Last, but certainly not least, the “Holistic Healer.” Uvita seems to draw them in with its mystical energy. From yoga instructors and meditation gurus to herbalists and Reiki masters, they’re here to heal your body, mind, and soul. If you’ve ever wanted to align your chakras, find inner peace, or simply stretch out that pesky back pain, they’ve got you covered.
Amidst all these personalities, what struck me most was the camaraderie. It’s a symphony of backgrounds and stories, but they all share a universal love for Uvita. Whether it’s the intoxicating beauty, the slower pace of life, or the warm, welcoming local community, they’ve all found something in Uvita that resonates deeply.
As a traveler, it’s easy to focus solely on the natural beauty of a place. But often, it’s the people who make a destination come alive, who add layers to its stories, and who make the sunsets a tad more colorful. In Uvita, the American expat community does just that.
As I left Uvita, with its shimmering beaches fading in the rearview, I carried with me tales of those who arrived as visitors but stayed as torchbearers of the Pura Vida spirit. It made me wonder, if I returned in a few years, which of these categories would I find myself in? Only time will tell.
