Debunking the 5 most common Vastu myths: Mr. Girender Bharti, Vastu Expert and Founder of Vastu Wisdom

Mr Girender Bharti

In India, people who buy a new house or plot ensure it is Vastu-compliant. Vastu, an age-old Vedic science, guides people towards a prosperous and well-balanced life.

The knowledge of Vastu is so widespread that almost everyone knows at least some aspects of it. But this also leads to confusion and creates myths around Vastu. Below mentioned are some of the most common myths floating around us. Take a look:

Myth 1: Entrance door should face north-east

Many people consider the entrance door of a house should be in the north-east direction only. They believe it is auspicious as per the Vastu and don’t even consider plots facing west and south directions.

But the surprising fact is that more than 80 per cent of the most successful businessmen and highly influential people live in properties facing either west or south.

While the west direction brings knowledge, skill, and expertise, the south represents fame, recognition and power.

Myth 2: Puja can only be performed in the north-east direction

Another wide-spread myth is that all kinds of puja can only be performed in the north-east direction of your house and work place.

If you will observe old palaces or homes which are Vastu-compliant; you will find the temples were always made in the west direction. Also, in all those temples, deities had been placed in the west, facing the east direction.

Different directions have different presiding deities who govern varied aspects of our lives. Therefore, to worship a particular deity, puja should be offered in alignment with the direction the deity governs.

For instance, puja of Lord Hanuman and Goddess Mother Durga should be performed in the south direction.

Myth 3: Toilet and kitchen should not be together

It is a common misconception that in a building, the kitchen and toilet, should not be adjacent to each other. According to Vastu-shastra, the ideal location for a toilet and kitchen are adjoining each other as per the element theory.

Actually, toilets and kitchens, both should be built after considering the element associated. The best location for a kitchen according to Vastu is South-East, North-West, West, South And South-South-East.

On the other hand, for toilets, South-South-West, West-North-West and East-South-East are the best locations. It shows clearly that the ideal locations of a kitchen lie adjacent to the ideal locations of a toilet.

Myth 4: North-East zone should be always kept empty

It is a general belief that the northeast zone of the house should be kept empty. However, this is not true. North-east direction attracts creative ideas and new thoughts.

It is also suited for meditation and contemplation. Therefore, it should not be used for any non-productive work such as creating a store room. Don’t waste your creative energies, utilise them intelligently and effectively.

Myth 5: Study facing East only

During our school life, almost all of us were told innumerable times by our parents, friends and other well-wishers to study facing the East.

The fact, however, is that there is no one direction that is suitable for all fields of study. It depends upon the subject being studied.

To study mathematics and science face west direction. For developing good debating skills, logical ability and sharp business acumen face South. For creative or religious work, one should study facing east.
