Deepak Singhanwal’s Journey to the Indian Administrative Service

Deepak Singhanwal

Deepak Singhanwal, hailing from Jaipur, embarked on an extraordinary journey in 2023 when he joined the prestigious Indian Administrative Service (IAS) after successfully clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2022.

Currently assigned to the Uttar Pradesh cadre, Deepak’s path to this esteemed position was paved with determination, hard work, and a profound desire to contribute to his country.

Childhood and Education

Deepak’s childhood was a diverse tapestry woven across different corners of India. His early years were spent in the quaint village of Natata, where he immersed himself in the rural life alongside his grandparents and extended family.

The lush carrot fields surrounding their humble abode and the presence of farm animals instilled in him a deep appreciation for nature and the rhythm of rural living.

Frequent relocations necessitated by his father’s employment with the Central Government provided Deepak with the unique opportunity to experience life in various states, from the vibrant streets of Patna to the bustling metropolis of Ahmedabad. Each move exposed him to new adventures and broadened his perspectives.

His formal education commenced at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Patna. Upon his family’s relocation to Ahmedabad, he continued his studies at Kendriya Vidyalaya Shahibaug, completing his primary schooling there. Despite living in multiple cities, Deepak’s fondest childhood memories are intertwined with Ahmedabad, where he spent precious time with his parents.

Returning to Jaipur with his family, Deepak enrolled in Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, where he completed his 6th to 12th grades. However, fate took a tragic turn during his 7th grade year when his father passed away.

This profound loss left a lasting void in the family, but Deepak witnessed firsthand the resilience and unwavering strength of his mother as she raised her children, ensured their education, and managed their household with fortitude.

Choosing Engineering

As Deepak approached the pivotal decision of choosing a subject stream for 10th grade, he found himself at a crossroads. At that time, schools offered limited guidance on future career aspirations. While many students gravitated towards Mathematics, Deepak’s passion lay in the intricacies of Physics.

This led him to pursue Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics with the ultimate goal of securing admission to IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) through the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination).

Engineering Journey at IIT BHU

After graduating from 12th grade, Deepak embarked on the next chapter of his academic journey, enrolling in IIT BHU (Banaras Hindu University) in Varanasi. Mechanical Engineering at IIT BHU held special significance for him as the institution had a rich history and a reputation for excellence. It was here that he spent four transformative years that shaped his future path.

During his undergraduate years, Deepak immersed himself in the world of engineering, embracing its challenges and reveling in its rewards. He formed lasting friendships, embraced the vibrant college life, and pursued his academic interests with unwavering dedication.

Exploring UPSC

As his undergraduate years drew to a close, Deepak began contemplating his career trajectory. While he had initially envisioned himself pursuing higher studies abroad or entering the corporate world, a small voice within him urged him to explore the UPSC Civil Services Examination.

His mother’s childhood stories of encountering the District Collector during a visit to her village school had left an indelible mark on his young mind. He had witnessed the profound impact that civil servants could have on the lives of ordinary citizens and longed to contribute to his country in a meaningful way.

Preparation and Determination

Despite having secured a placement with Adani Group during his final year, Deepak made the bold decision to pursue his UPSC dream. Declining the placement, he dedicated himself to studying the vast UPSC syllabus. He began with NCERT books and gradually progressed to reference and standard books.

His preparation was largely a solitary journey, guided by the unwavering support of his mother and sister. Recognizing the importance of self-study and practice, he did not attend any coaching classes.

He believed that he could effectively understand the material through his own efforts. Additionally, he recognized the significance of practice and mock tests in enhancing his exam-taking skills.

Prelims and Mains

Deepak’s first attempt at the UPSC Prelims in 2021 proved to be an invaluable learning experience. While he encountered some questions based on his studies, he realized that the exam demanded more than just reading and memorizing. He learned the importance of continuous revision and the role of practice mock tests in honing exam-taking strategies.

Undeterred by his initial setback, Deepak continued his preparation with renewed focus on revision and practice. The following year, in 2022, he approached the Prelims with greater confidence and successfully cleared the exam.
