An exclusive interview with Dr. Archika Didi, Vice Chairperson of Vishwa Jagriti Mission
In an enlightening interview with Dr. Archika Didi, Vice Chairperson of Vishwa Jagriti Mission, we explored the profound impact of meditation on mental wellness and the importance of compassionate living. Her insights shed light on how these practices can transform lives and foster a more harmonious society.
Can you share your personal journey into meditation and yogic science? What inspired you to pursue a PhD in this field?
The seeds of spirituality were sown at a very early age. I believe it was my natural inclination to explore this side of life that motivated me to understand the problems of the human mind. Meditation has always been a powerful tool on this journey, and I have found it helpful for everyone.
To deepen my own understanding and make these practices more relevant, I have completed more than 500 meditation retreats nationally and internationally.
Mastering meditation helped me unfold the complexities of human life and find answers to questions that eventually led to peace.
I also pursued advanced studies, including a PhD in yogic science, to unlock deeper knowledge and so I could spread and awaken the innate happiness present in everyone.
In your experience, what are the most effective meditation practices for beginners? How can one overcome common challenges faced during meditation?
Meditation is a journey where you gradually escalate to explore your inner self. To begin with, beginners can start with mantra chanting. This helps in instilling a sense of peace and calmness that eventually boosts concentration.
One of the key challenges while meditating is to keep the focus static without getting swayed by the thoughts; for this, one can gently return their focus to breathing or a mantra. Accept distractions as normal, releasing them without frustration.
To overcome the external distraction, one must choose a quiet spot and time for practice. Over a period of time, you will develop inner detachment from noise or interruptions.
How do you define meditation, and what role does it play in modern wellness practices?
Meditation is the art of aligning your inner self with the divine energy of the universe. Following the meditation practice daily brings mental clarity, emotional balance, and deep inner peace.
Meditation plays a crucial role in wellness by reducing stress, calming the mind, and enhancing joy. It helps individuals gain control over thoughts and behaviour, leading to a more conscious, harmonious, and spiritually enriched life.
How do different cultures perceive meditation and yoga? Have you noticed any significant differences in practice or philosophy?
Meditation cannot be bound in the shackles of cultural boundaries; it is a universal tool to eventually achieve nirvana and realign the chakras.
The modes may vary from culture to culture, for example, some may focus solely on breathing, while others may consider mantra chanting as a way to focus, but the eventual goal is to align the mind and soul with the universal energy that instils a sense of contentment.
What are some common misconceptions about spirituality that you encounter, and how do you address them?
Three common misconceptions about spirituality are:
- One must renounce the world
- Spiritual life is joyless
- It is limited to rigid rituals
But in reality, true spirituality means living fully and joyfully in the world, finding happiness within rather than from external things, and experiencing freedom by going beyond rituals to connect with your true self and the divine presence.
How do you see the future of meditation and yogic practices evolving in a fast-paced, technology-driven world?
We are living in a dynamic world, where rapid changes and constant competition can create impatience, overwhelm, and mental unrest.
Our Blissful Living and Emotional Healing programs are specifically designed to help you reconnect with your inner self and become a stronger person who can cope with the challenges and dynamism of this ever-changing environment.
Meditation plays a central role—it calms negative thoughts, releases stress, and soothes anxiety brought on by this fast pace. It rejuvenates the mind, boosts self-understanding, and cultivates contentment.
Through these practices, you gain focus and inner strength, empowering you to adapt positively to life’s demands while maintaining true balance and clarity.
What advice would you give to individuals who are looking to deepen their meditation practice or integrate yogic principles into their daily lives?
To deepen your meditation practice, cultivate self-awareness by being present in each moment, fully engage with your work and surroundings.
Focus on one task at a time and consciously take breaks to relax and recharge. The first lesson is to keep your mind relaxed and balanced; balance is the true essence of yoga. As the Gita says: Samatvam Yog uchyate—equanimity is yoga’s heart.
Dr. Archika Didi’s wisdom emphasizes the necessity of integrating meditation and compassion into our daily lives, offering a pathway to mental wellness and deeper connections with ourselves and others. Her vision inspires a collective journey towards a more mindful and compassionate world.
