I want to offer my clients a high-end, opulent experience that will be reflected in every aspect of the clinic, from its technology to equipment to its staff and interior design.
Tell us a little about yourself
Dr. Parampreet Kohli: I have spent my childhood in Delhi with my parents and elder sibling. My father worked as an Accounts professor at Delhi University, and later his interest in the stock market encouraged him to set up his own stock broking firm.
My mother supported the family as a house maker and my brother is a banker owing his own financial startup. I was always encouraged by my family to follow my passion so I completed my Masters of Dental Surgery (MDS) in Prosthodontics, Crowns and Bridges and Implantology from Manipal College of Dental Sciences.
Later I worked as a Prosthodontist at Clove Dental Clinic. My wish to gain more knowledge led me to work as an associate Prosthodontist at Pradhan Dental Centre in Mumbai.
After gaining significant experience, I realized that more than the skill, it’s the vision and the values that the dentist holds that make the difference and hence I developed and executed the idea of having my own dental setup.
Can you tell us about your experience in aesthetic dentistry and smile designing? What inspired you to specialize in aesthetic dentistry and smile designing?
Dr. Parampreet Kohli: I personally feel that a smile is a powerful tool that can have a profound impact on our lives. It is a universal language that transcends cultural barriers and connects us with others.
A beautiful smile enhances our self-confidence and self-esteem, empowering us to face life’s challenges with a positive attitude.
Providing this confidence to a person gives me immense happiness and gratification and hence it’s my passion and purpose to create my niche in aesthetic dentistry.
While studying in my undergraduation I developed a keen interest towards aesthetic dentistry and hence I pursued my Masters in Prosthodontics where I spent 3 years studying the details and the science behind it.
Then, I continued to apply my knowledge and gain immense experience in aesthetic dentistry and smile designing.
How do you approach smile design for your patients? What factors do you consider?
Dr. Parampreet Kohli: Every smile is unique to an individual and at Smile Couture Dental Clinic, we take a comprehensive approach to smile design, considering various factors to ensure optimal results for our patients.
Our goal is to create beautiful, natural-looking smiles that enhance our patient’s overall facial aesthetics and boost their confidence.
The first and most important step to approach smile designing is to understand what a patient wants. Setting the expectations right, educating and communicating with them with respect to how their smile can be designed is most vital.
While smile designing is an aesthetic branch of dentistry, it’s very important to take care of the functional aspects of the teeth structure.
We then create a customized smile design plan tailored to each patient’s unique needs and preferences and use the latest techniques and technologies to deliver exceptional smile transformations to help them achieve their dream smiles.
What are the latest advancements or techniques in aesthetic dentistry that you find most exciting or promising?
Dr. Parampreet Kohli: Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology has revolutionized dentistry.
It enables dentists to create highly accurate and natural-looking restorations like crowns, veneers, and inlays/onlays using computerized systems. This technology improves both the efficiency and aesthetic outcomes of dental procedures.
Another is Laser technology, which is being increasingly used in aesthetic dentistry for procedures like gum contouring, teeth whitening, and the treatment of gum disease.
Laser dentistry offers enhanced precision, reduced bleeding, and faster healing times compared to traditional techniques.
Orthodontics has also seen significant advancements in recent years. Clear aligner systems, such as Invisalign, have gained popularity as an aesthetically pleasing alternative to traditional braces.
How do you ensure that your patients’ expectations are met when it comes to smile designing?
Dr. Parampreet Kohli: I feel when dealing with the expectations of a patient during smile designing, it’s important to establish clear communication and manage their expectations effectively. Here are some steps that I personally take to address patients’ expectations:
- Active Listening: To begin with actively listening to the patient’s concerns, desires, and expectations. Give them ample time to express themselves and understand their specific goals for smile enhancement. This helps me to align the treatment plan with their expectations.
- Education and Explanation: As a dental professional, I feel it’s crucial to educate the patient about the possibilities and limitations of smile designing. I explain to them the various treatment options available, their potential outcomes, and any associated risk with it. I really put an effort to make the patient understand what can realistically be achieved based on their unique dental structure and conditions.
- Visual Aids: Using visual aids such as videos, photographs, digital smile simulations, or before-and-after examples of previous cases to help the patient visualize potential outcomes. This can give them a better understanding of what to expect and make informed decisions about their treatment.
- Mock-up or Trial Smile: I feel the most important and crucial step is creating a mock-up or trial smile for the patient. This involves using temporary materials or digital imaging to demonstrate the potential results of the proposed treatment. It allows the patient to see and experience the changes before committing to the final treatment plan.
- Comprehensive Communication: According to me maintaining open and transparent communication throughout the treatment process is essential. Addressing any concerns or questions the patient may have promptly and honestly. Regularly updating them on the progress, changes, and potential modifications to the treatment plan.
- Post-Treatment Care: I make sure to provide detailed instructions on how to care for the new smile after the treatment is completed. I feel educating the patient on maintaining good oral hygiene, attending regular check-ups, and following any recommended maintenance or follow-up procedures is very crucial for the longevity of the new smile.
What are the common concerns or challenges that patients have when seeking aesthetic dental treatments, and how do you address them?
Dr. Parampreet Kohli: A lot of my patients are concerned about the uncertainty of the final results, i.e. they want to know how their smile will look after the treatment.
I address this by using advanced smile design techniques, digital imaging, and mock-ups to provide patients with a preview of the expected results. This helps them visualise the outcome and make informed decisions.
Another concern is related to natural-looking results. My patients desire natural-looking outcomes that blend seamlessly with their existing teeth and facial features.
I emphasize the use of advanced techniques, high-quality materials, and artistic craftsmanship to create aesthetically pleasing and harmonious smiles.
Also, my patients ask about the time required for aesthetic dental treatments and how long the results would last.
I always provide a clear timeline by explaining the treatment process step by step and educating them on proper oral hygiene practices, recommend regular dental check-ups, and provide guidance on maintaining their new smiles. I strive to optimize treatment efficiency without compromising the quality of results.
How do you stay updated with the latest developments in aesthetic dentistry and incorporate them into your practice?
Dr. Parampreet Kohli: As a dentist, staying updated with the latest developments in aesthetic dentistry is essential for providing the best possible care to patients. Education is the key, it’s necessary to constantly keep gaining knowledge, especially in the field you work.
For me, I keep an active participation in education programs, workshops, seminars, and conferences that focus on aesthetic dentistry.
These events allow me to learn about the latest research, and advancements in techniques, materials, and technologies.
By attending lectures and hands-on workshops, I stay up to date with the evolving field and incorporate new knowledge into my practice.
I actively engage with other dental professionals, including specialists in aesthetic dentistry, through professional networks and study clubs.
This allows me to discuss and share experiences, learn from their expertise, and stay informed about emerging techniques or treatment modalities.
What advice do you have for individuals who are considering aesthetic dental treatments but are unsure about the process or outcome?
Dr. Parampreet Kohli: The most important advice is to first get a Smile Consultation done by an experienced Aesthetic Dentist. During the consultation, you can discuss your concerns, and desired outcomes, and ask any questions you may have.
A skilled dentist will listen to your goals, evaluate your oral health, and provide professional advice tailored to your specific needs.
You can then explore and discuss various treatment options. Aesthetic dental treatments encompass a wide range of procedures, including teeth whitening, veneers, dental bonding, clear aligners, and more. Understanding the benefits, limitations, and potential outcomes of each treatment option helps you make an informed decision.
Also, get a digital smile preview, provided by advanced digital imaging software to see a preview of the expected results.
This can help you visualize the potential outcome of the treatment and removes the uncertainty regarding the final outcome.
Can you explain the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in achieving optimal smile design results?
Dr. Parampreet Kohli: Aesthetic smile design goes beyond just improving the appearance of teeth. It considers the overall harmony and balance of facial features, gum aesthetics, occlusion (bite), and the health of supporting structures.
By specialising in different fields such as prosthodontics, orthodontics, periodontics, and oral surgery, a comprehensive evaluation can be conducted to assess each component and create a tailored treatment plan.
Each dental speciality brings a unique set of skills, knowledge, and expertise to the table. A prosthodontic specialist is skilled in creating and placing dental restorations like crowns or veneers, while orthodontists specialize in tooth movement and alignment.
Periodontists focus on gum health and aesthetics, and oral surgeons handle complex surgical procedures.
By accepting a multidisciplinary approach, the treatment can be precisely targeted to address specific concerns, leading to optimal results.
What are some of the common misconceptions or myths about aesthetic dentistry that you often encounter, and how do you address them?
Dr. Parampreet Kohli: The first myth is people think aesthetic dentistry only is concerned with improving facial appearance. Aesthetic dentistry is concerned with overall oral health. Oral health is of major importance even while performing cosmetic treatment.
The second myth is aesthetic dental treatments are only for celebrities or the wealthy. No, they are accessible to anyone who desires to improve their smile.
I emphasize that there are various treatment options available at different price points, and I work with patients to find a solution that suits their budgets and goals.
The third myth is these treatments are painful and invasive. Modern aesthetic dental treatments are designed to minimize discomfort and offer less invasive options.
Fourth myth is these treatments are not durable and require frequent replacements. Aesthetic dental treatments, when properly planned, executed, and maintained, can be long-lasting and durable.
The durability of treatments depends on factors such as the materials used, proper oral hygiene, and regular dental care.
Fifth myth is that these treatments look unnatural or fake. With advancements in materials and techniques, aesthetic dental treatments can produce natural-looking results.
Sixth myth is these treatments are a quick fix. While some aesthetic treatments can yield noticeable improvements in a short time, comprehensive smile design often requires careful planning and may involve multiple phases or appointments.
Do you have any tips for maintaining a healthy and beautiful smile after undergoing aesthetic dental treatments?
After undergoing aesthetic dental treatments, it’s important to maintain a healthy and beautiful smile to prolong the longevity of your results.
First and foremost maintain a consistent oral hygiene routine by brushing your teeth at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
Don’t forget to floss daily to remove plaque and debris from between your teeth and along the gumline. Water flossers are great in that aspect.
Good oral hygiene helps prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and staining, keeping your smile healthy and beautiful.
Choose toothpaste and mouthwash that are specifically formulated for maintaining and protecting dental restorations, such as veneers or crowns.
Avoid abrasive toothpaste or harsh mouthwashes, as they can scratch or damage the surfaces of your dental restorations.
Limit the consumption of stain-causing substances like coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco products. If you do consume them, rinse your mouth with water afterwards to minimize their contact with your teeth.
Additionally, using a straw when drinking beverages can help reduce contact with your teeth.
The most important aspect is to maintain regular dental check-ups and cleanings with your dentist to ensure the ongoing health and maintenance of your teeth and restorations.
Adhere to any specific post-treatment instructions provided by your dentist. These instructions may include dietary restrictions, specific oral care recommendations, or guidelines for wearing removable appliances.
