An Exclusive Interview with Retd. Lt. Col. Dr. Praveen Kumar Reddy – Director at Swami Vivekanand Health Mission Society
Meet Retd. Lt. Col. Dr. Praveen Kumar Reddy, Director of Swami Vivekanand Health Mission Society. From army battlefields to rural healing fronts, his journey blends military discipline with compassionate healthcare. Discover his vision for accessible, transformative health services across India.
Please give us a brief overview of the Swami Vivekananda Health Mission Society’s mission and its founding principles.
Dr. Praveen Kumar Reddy: Swami Vivekananda Health Mission Society (SVHMS) was founded with the mission of providing free, quality healthcare to pilgrims and underserved communities in remote regions.
Inspired by the principle of “Nar Sewa Narayan Sewa,” the society believes that serving humanity is the highest form of service. It was established to address the critical lack of medical facilities along the Char Dham routes, where SVHMS now treats nearly 3–5 lakh pilgrims annually during the six-month Yatra period.
What are some of the key health programs or campaigns the society is currently running, and who are the primary beneficiaries?
Dr. Praveen Kumar Reddy: SVHMS provides elaborate healthcare facilities through charitable hospitals, emergency care facilities, ICU facilities, and mobile medical camps.
A prime area of focus continues to remain the provision of medical facilities during the Char Dham Yatra, which serves the purpose of lakhs of pilgrims each year. Apart from that, the society conducts health camps in villages at high altitudes and in other inaccessible places.
How does the society collaborate with government bodies, NGOs, or private sectors to scale its health missions?
Dr. Praveen Kumar Reddy: SVHMS has been working hand in hand with the government authorities and administrations in effectively revamping the healthcare sector in tricky terrain locations.
For example, the establishment of hospitals in key pilgrimage areas has helped reduce mortality rates by over 90%. Currently, the society runs 15 charitable hospitals in the locations of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi.
What are the biggest challenges the society faces in delivering healthcare services, especially in underserved areas?
Dr. Praveen Kumar Reddy: Healthcare delivery in high-altitude, remote locations involve challenges such as difficult terrain, extreme weather, infrastructural challenges, and delay in response at time of an emergency.
In an effort to address these circumstances, SVHMS developed its Char Dham Sathi App, through which pilgrims can get connected to nearby SVHMS hospitals and doctors. The app also provides the pilgrim with the option to consult a doctor directly. Users can also access an ambulance even without internet connectivity.
Looking ahead, what are the society’s goals for the next 3–5 years, and how do you plan to achieve them?
Dr. Praveen Kumar Reddy: Over the next 3 to 5 years, the goal is to expand the hospitals network, the emergency facilities, as well as the ICU facilities, while expanding the reach to the distant villages.
To achieve these objectives in the future, the society intends to achieve the goals of delivering improved digital solutions in the field of health, improving volunteer doctor participation, and fostering sustainable involvement of donors in the society.
Another objective of the society is to minimize migration from hill areas by creating local employment and improving social infrastructure.
How can individuals or corporations get involved or contribute to the Swami Vivekananda Health Mission Society?
Dr. Praveen Kumar Reddy: Individuals and corporations can contribute to the growth of SVHMS through donations, Corporate Social Responsibility partnerships, medical volunteering, or funding health camps and upgrading facilities.
With the contributions, the initiatives of free health services can be sustained, thus facilitating the delivery of health care to distant areas of the region.
Medical professionals, students, and socially responsible organizations, are encouraged to come on board and become part of this mission-driven healthcare movement.
Dr. Praveen Kumar Reddy’s insights reveal a blueprint for equitable healthcare through Swami Vivekanand Health Mission. His call to action—unite discipline, innovation, and service—promises hope for millions. Inspired? Join the mission to build a healthier, stronger India tomorrow.
