Can you tell us about your journey into orthodontics and what inspired you to specialize in this field?

Dr Ravneet Kaur: I remember suffering from acute dental pain and bad dental health as a child because of missed dental appointments. The only reason was anxiety as I always used to dread going to a dentist. 

So I understand how intimidating a visit to a dentist can be, especially with the uncomfortable and serious atmosphere of dental clinics. That’s when I decided to enter into this field of health care with a difference!

We made it a priority to create a friendly and cosy dental environment by adding vibrant colors to all our clinics in Delhi and Gurgaon, making it feel less clinical and more welcoming, which helps reduce patient anxiety.

Recognizing the lack of kid-friendly dental clinics, we decided to make unique dental offices where kids and adults can be treated under the same roof, offering specialized facilities for both.

What impact does orthodontics treatment with braces/ aligners make? 

Dr Ravneet Kaur: Orthodontics to me is not just straightening teeth with braces or clear aligners. It is about creating those life-changing smiles that not only enhance appearance but also improve oral health. 

My passion lies in seeing the positive changes in my patient’s lives as they gain newfound self-confidence and happiness. Witnessing their transformation and the smiles they radiate is incredibly fulfilling and drives my dedication to this field.

Who needs ortho treatment/ ideal candidates for orthodontic treatment with braces/clear aligners

Dr Ravneet Kaur: Ideal candidates for orthodontic treatment are individuals who have misaligned teeth or jaw issues that affect their smile or bite. This can include people with crooked teeth, gaps between teeth, overbites, underbites, or crossbites.

Orthodontic treatment is suitable for children, teens, and adults who want to improve their dental health and the appearance of their smile. If you’re self-conscious about your teeth or experiencing difficulty with chewing or speaking due to alignment issues, orthodontic treatment could be a great option for you.

In your experience, what are the most common misconceptions people have about orthodontic treatments?

 Dr Ravneet Kaur: There are a few common misconceptions about orthodontic treatment that I’d like to clarify.

–  First, some people think that orthodontics is just about improving appearance, but that’s not the case. Straight teeth are not only aesthetically pleasing but also healthier. They are easier to clean, less susceptible to cavities and gum disease, and generally last longer when the bite is properly aligned.

–  Another myth is that orthodontic treatment should only start when all permanent teeth have erupted, typically around ages 13 to 15. In reality, preventive and interceptive orthodontics can begin as early as age 7.

Early intervention helps guide the erupting permanent teeth into their proper positions and can prevent more severe issues down the road. Treating jaw-related problems before puberty can also be more effective and less complex.

–  One more common myth is that adults can’t get orthodontic treatment. In reality, orthodontic care is suitable for all ages, as long as your teeth, gums, and jawbone are healthy.

For adults seeking more discreet options, aesthetic appliances like clear aligners and clear braces offer effective and faster alternatives to traditional visible braces.

–  A huge misconception is that orthodontic treatment can weaken your teeth. In reality, orthodontics uses a sophisticated light-force technique that is entirely safe and designed to improve oral health.

There are no risk factors if you maintain good oral hygiene and follow your orthodontist’s instructions carefully. The treatment aligns your teeth, improves the bad bite, close gaps, makes teeth self cleansing enhancing both their function and durability.

What are some of the most significant advancements in orthodontics that have impacted your practice in recent years?

Dr Ravneet Kaur: Clear aligners represent a significant advancement in orthodontics, offering a highly precise series of clear removable plates that makes them ideal for patients who want invisible, painless appliances and also a boon for those who travel frequently.

They require fewer in-person visits and less time spent in the dentist’s chair compared to traditional braces.

In addition to being nearly invisible, clear aligners are also more comfortable and digitally planned treatment, often resulting in a quicker treatment process. This makes them a great alternative to conventional braces.

Digital orthodontics has revolutionized the field with the use of digital scanners for precise measurements and treatment planning.

This technology allows for sophisticated smile design, where patients can see a preview of their results even before starting the treatment. It also eliminates the discomfort associated with monthly follow-ups for braces adjustments, making the entire process more convenient and comfortable.

Damon self-locking braces represent a significant evolution in orthodontic treatment. They are an excellent option for children who may not consistently follow through with wearing clear aligners. These braces are friction-free, more hygienic, and nearly invisible.

Since they are fixed to the teeth, they don’t rely on the child’s compliance like removable systems do, making them a reliable and effective choice for young patients.

New Generation Retainers like Essix and Vivera are much more comfortable options for stabilizing teeth after orthodontic treatment.

Unlike the old-school wired retainer plates, which were bulky, visible, and often caused speech issues, these clear retainers are discreet and easy to wear, making them a much better choice for maintaining your smile post-treatment.
