What motivated you both to start FirstEdge, and how did you come up with the name?

Our motivation to start FirstEdge stemmed from a shared passion for sports and a recognised gap in the Indian market for high-quality, player-centric sports equipment for new age sports such as pickleball & padel.

We observed that many products available either lacked features or were prohibitively expensive. We wanted to create a brand that empowers athletes to perform at their best by providing innovative and accessible gear.

As for the name “FirstEdge,” it embodies our core philosophy. “First” signifies our commitment to being pioneers in developing cutting-edge sports technology and our belief in giving athletes the “first” advantage on the field.

“Edge” represents the competitive advantage our products offer, pushing athletes beyond their limits. Together, it reflects our dedication to innovation and performance.

Can you describe some of the innovative features in your products that cater specifically to Indian athletes?

Indian athletes look for products that provide the best value, last a long-time, and have a great design. At FirstEdge, our product line up address all of these needs for players across all skill levels. So if you’re a beginner or an advanced athlete, there’s a FirstEdge Pickleball Paddle for you. 

What is your process for researching and developing new products?

Our product research and development process is highly collaborative and athlete-centric. It begins with extensive market research, including direct engagement with athletes, coaches, and everyday players to understand their pain points and evolving needs.

This qualitative feedback is complemented by research on current market trends and technological advancements.

A crucial phase involves rigorous real-world on-ground testing, with professional and amateur athletes providing critical feedback.

This iterative feedback loop allows us to refine our products until they meet the highest standards of performance, durability, and athlete satisfaction.  Once needs are identified, we utilize 3D modeling and rapid prototyping techniques to quickly iterate on designs. 

How do you differentiate FirstEdge from other sports brands in India and globally?

FirstEdge differentiates itself through a multi-pronged approach. Firstly, our focus on product & design sets us apart. Secondly, our commitment to innovation and quality at an accessible price point provides a significant competitive advantage.

We believe that top-tier performance gear should not be exclusive. Finally, our agile development process allows us to quickly adapt to market changes and introduce new products that meet evolving athlete needs, giving us an edge over larger, more bureaucratic organisations.

What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as co-founders, and how did you overcome them?

As co-founders, we’ve faced several significant challenges, common to many startups but magnified in the competitive sports industry.

One was establishing our brand identity and gaining market trust in a landscape dominated by established international players.

We addressed this through consistent product quality and targeted marketing campaigns. Navigating supply chain complexities and ensuring timely production and delivery, also requires careful planning.

Are there plans to expand your product line or enter new markets in the near future?

Yes, we are continuously researching and developing new products to diversify our existing Pickleball product line – we are soon launching a uniquely designed beginners pickleball racket, to make the sport even more accessible.

We are launching Padel tennis too, a sporting which is also gaining tremendous popularity in urban cities. 

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to enter the sports industry?

For aspiring entrepreneurs looking to enter the sports industry, our primary advice would be to thoroughly understand your target audience and identify a genuine unmet need.

The sports industry is passionate but also competitive, so differentiation is key. Don’t just create another product; create a solution that truly enhances the athlete’s experience or performance.
