By Arijit Roy: Apeejay School, Saket alumnus Varun Mittal has charted a dynamic career path, transitioning from digital marketing to finance.
After completing his BBA in Finance from NMIMS Mumbai, he spent over four years mastering performance marketing before following his passion and enrolling in IIM Ranchi’s MBA program. In this interview, he shares his experiences, key learnings, and advice for aspiring students.
Varun, tell us about your academic journey from Apeejay School, Saket to IIM Ranchi.
I graduated from Apeejay Saket in 2016, having pursued commerce in my senior secondary years. I then completed my BBA in Finance from NMIMS Mumbai. After working for 4.5 years in digital marketing, I decided to follow my passion for finance and enrolled in the MBA program at IIM Ranchi.
You started your career in digital marketing. What was your experience like?
I joined a startup called Social Labs, where I worked in performance marketing, managing over 100 brands on Meta platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
Eventually, I was promoted to a managerial role, overseeing collaboration between marketers, designers, and content writers. The biggest lessons I learned were client communication, leadership, and teamwork.
How did your time at Apeejay Saket shape your skills and values?
Apeejay played a huge role in building my teamwork and leadership skills. I was part of the basketball team, which helped me understand collaboration.
Additionally, our school emphasized moral values, and I was honored with the Dr. Stya Paul Award for Human Values. Teachers like Ms. Anjali Batra nurtured my interest in commerce and finance, setting me on this path.
How has your MBA experience at IIM Ranchi been so far?
It’s been intense but rewarding. The competition is tough, but the exposure is phenomenal. With over 100 industry talks, I’ve had the opportunity to learn directly from business leaders. The networking and skill-building here are helping me prepare for the next stage of my career.
So, what advice would you give to current Apeejay students?
Hang in there! Not everything will go as planned, but persistence is key. Keep learning, stay open to opportunities, and trust that things will eventually fall into place.
