Gautam Adani Becomes 2nd Richest Person In World, overtakes Amazon’s Jeff Bezos.
Updated on 17 Sep, 2022: Adani Group Chairperson Gautam Adani has now become the second richest person in the world.
According to Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaires List, Adani’s net worth is $155.7 billion as of September 16, 2022, surpassing Amazon’s Jeff Bezos.
Adani is now behind only Tesla’s Elon Musk as the world’s richest person with a net worth of $273.5 billion.
Adani’s net worth rose even as shares of Adani group companies (Adani Enterprises, Adani Port and Adani Transmission) touched their record highs on the BSE on Friday (September 16).
In the calendar year 2022, Adani added over $70 billion to his wealth, making him the only one among the world’s 10 richest people to increase his net worth this year.
He became a centennial in April and last month overtook Microsoft Corp’s Bill Gates as the world’s fourth-richest person.
Last month, Adani became the first Asian to make the top-3 of the Bloomberg Billionaires Index with a net worth of $137.4 billion, overtaking the ranking business magnate Bernard Arnault, who co-founded luxury fashion chain LVMH.
Gautam Adani surpassed Jeff Bezos and Bernard Arnault to take second place with a net worth of $154.7 billion, but only briefly.
Meanwhile Mr Adani’s wealth fell to $151.3 billion as his profit fell from $4 billion to $1.1 billion, settling in third place.
Bezos ranks fourth with a net worth of $149.7 billion, down $2.3 billion. Mukesh Ambani, head of Reliance Industries Limited, is in eighth place and is worth $92 billion.
Mr. Gautam Adani, a first-generation entrepreneur, heads the Adani Group, which comprises seven publicly listed companies spanning infrastructure, mining, energy and other sectors.
Over the past five years, Adani Enterprises has invested heavily in new growth areas including airports, cement, copper refining, data centers, green hydrogen, petrochemical refining, roads and solar cell manufacturing.
It also plans to enter the telecom space and has big plans to grow its green hydrogen and airport businesses. Now, within a month, he has overtaken Bezos to take second place.
