Gautam Adani is an Indian billionaire Entrepreneur and industrialist who is the founder of the Ahmedabad-based multinational conglomerate called “Adani Group”. The company is involved in port development and operations in India.

Gautam Adani, an Indian billionaire industrialist was born in a Gujarati-Jain family on 24 June 1962 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. His father’s name is Shantilal Adani and mother’s name is Shanti Adani.

His father was a textile merchant. Gautam has 7 siblings and his parents had migrated from the small town of Tharad in the northern part of Gujarat in hopes of securing greater opportunities for their family.

Gautam completed his schooling from Sheth Chimanlal Nagindas Vidyalaya school in Ahmedabad. He enrolled in a bachelor’s degree in commerce at Gujarat University, he realized academics was not for him.

Gautam shocked many by dropping out of college and he dropped out after the second year.

In 1978, as a teenager, Gautam moved to Mumbai, the City of Dreams with only a hundred rupees. He worked as a diamond sorter for Mahendra Brothers for 2-3 years.

At the same time, Adani established his own diamond brokerage firm at Zaveri Bazaar, the unrivaled jewelry market of Mumbai.

in 1981, Mansukhbhai Adani, Gautam’s elder brother bought a plastics unit in Ahmedabad and invited him to manage the business. Gautam Adani started his importing primary polymers business for small-scale industries In 1985.

In 1988, Gautam founded Adani Exports Limited, the holding company of the Adani Group. Today, Adani Export is known as Adani Enterprises Limited – Originally, the Adani Export dealt in power and agricultural commodities.

Adani Enterprises Limited diversified his business into logistics, resources, energy, aerospace, agriculture, defense and amongst others. Adani Exports Limited involved in port development and operations in India.

In 1991, Adani started expanding the businesses into trading of agro products, textiles, and metals. In 1993, Adani got the contract from the Government of Gujarat for managerial outsourcing of the Mundra Port.

Adani is married to Priti Adani, a dentist, Founder and Managing Trustee of the Adani Foundation.

In 1995, Adani started its first jetty which was operated by Mundra Port & Special Economic Zone. Mundra Port has the handling capacity of more than 200 million tons of cargo per annum and it is the largest private-sector port in India.

In 1996, Adani Power Limited was founded by Adani. It is the power business arm of the Adani Group. Adani Power holds 4620 MW thermal power plants. Adani Power Limited is the largest private thermal power producer in India.

Adani entered the Power generation business In 2006. From 2009 to 2012, he acquired Abbot Point Port in Australia and Carmichael Coal in Queensland.

According to Forbes, Gautam Adani has a 75% stake in Adani Transmission, a 75% stake in Adani Enterprises, a 66% stake in Adani Ports & SEZ Limited, 73% stake in Adani Power.

Gautam Adani was ranked as the 3rd most powerful person in India In 2019 by India Today.
