By Dr. Monica Kapoor, Director of Flawless Cosmetic Clinic and ILACAD Institute: As the sun ascends higher and days lengthen, our skincare routine requires a change for summer.
Summer means warmth, outdoor activities, and beautiful memories, yet these also bring a whole host of problems for your skin—be it dehydration, sunburn, an excess of oil, or breakouts.
With some thoughtful care and minor tweaks, one can sport glowing, healthy skin all through summer.
1. Go Generally Lighter With Your Products
To lighten your approach is one golden rule of summer skincare. Trade out rich creams and oil-based moisturizers for lighter water-based options.
Gel moisturizers work great-giving moisture without clogging your pores. As the temperature soars, so does your oil production, and heavy products lead to bumps and a greasy appearance.
2. Sunscreen Is Your Summer BFF
If there’s one thing never to skip in your summer skincare, it’s surely sunscreen. Broad-spectrum lotion, SPF 30 or greater, should be spread every single morning, rain or shine. Reapply every two hours, mainly when your skin gets wet, or you’re sweating.
Lightweight and non-comedogenic formulations are best to ensure your sunscreen won’t clog pores. Mineral sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are perfect for sensitive skin types.
3. Gentle Does It, But Thoroughly Cleanse
The summer season brings extra sweat, oil, and pollutants that attach to your skin even more easily. While cleansing becomes a fundamental requirement, harsh cleansers tend to strip the skin of its own natural moisture barrier.
Use a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser to get the dirt and extra oil off your face without irritating it. If acne is a concern, try adding a very mild salicylic acid wash, which can help keep your pores unclogged.
4. Hydrate From the Inside, Too
One of the most comforting thoughts almost everybody has about hydration is that it relates to topical moisturizers. Indeed, internal hydration is just as important.
Drink enough water for your skin to be elastic and glowing. Introduce hydrating serums with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid into your regime. In the daytime, mist your face with a refreshing facial spray to lock in hydration for a freshly plump feeling.
5. Exfoliate With Care
Exfoliation eliminates dead skin cells whilst keeping the complexion bright and preventing clogged pores. In summer, however, over-exfoliation is taboo as sun exposure tends to make its way to the sensitive skin.
Exfoliation should occur only one or two times a week with mild exfoliants such as lactic acid or fruit enzymes in scrub form.
6. Show the Lips and Eyes Some Love
The lips and delicate under-eye area are often forgotten about in summer skincare. The sun easily dries out the lips, and investing in a good SPF lip balm is worth it.
Sunglasses can shield the eyes from UV rays, while antioxidant-laden eye creams can help alleviate some signs of sun-induced aging.
7. Glow with Bare Minimum Makeup
Summer is the time to let loose on heavy makeup. Heavy foundations often feel uncomfortable and may block pores. Opt for tinted moisturizers or BB creams with sunscreen instead. Let your skin breathe and show the glow of health.
8. Antioxidant Nourishment
Summer is a time when oxidation stress occurs to the skin under UV rays; thus, antioxidants such as vitamin C, niacinamide, and green tea extract act to neutralize the free radicals, induce collagen formation, and even out skin tone.
Using a vitamin C serum in the morning can easily be one of the greatest ways to protect and brighten the skin.
Final Thoughts
Summer skincare doesn’t have to complicate the routine-it’s all about shrewd, mindful tweaks that keep your skin protected, hydrated, and replenished.
With a light formulation, sun savvy attitude, and conscientious hydration your skin will weather through the hottest months. Claim your summer with confidence; a glowing goddess is only a few conscious steps away!
