Gunjan Agarwal: After dedicating 22 years to being a full-time homemaker and mother, I embarked on a new journey – entrepreneurship.

The driving force behind this decision was my personal experience with the skincare industry, which left me wanting more.

I saw an opportunity to revolutionize the way skincare brands operated, prioritizing consumer satisfaction, skin safety, and delivering on promises. This vision sparked a passion within me to create a brand that truly understood and catered to the needs of its customers.

When the world came to a standstill in 2020, we saw it as a chance to explore and learn. We dived head-first into extensive research, studying skincare ingredients, their effects, sources, manufacturers, and legacy brands.

We also reached out to industry experts and manufacturers, gaining valuable insights that shaped our vision.

Months of dedication and hard work paid off, and by the end of 2020, we were confident that we were on the right path.

We knew we wanted to build a brand that would thrive online, connecting with our audience and providing them with the best possible skincare solutions.

With a clear vision and determination, we took our first steps towards creating a brand that would make a difference.

What is your process for developing new products, and how do you ensure they meet the needs of your customers?

Gunjan Agarwal: When it comes to developing new products, we follow a meticulous process that’s driven by our commitment to our customers’ trust and satisfaction. At the heart of our approach is a deep understanding of what our customers need and expect from us.

To ensure our products meet the highest standards of safety and efficacy, we’ve partnered with a renowned agency that puts our products through rigorous testing.

Each product undergoes trials on 24 voluntary human subjects over one week, and the results are impressive – our products boast an irritability score of 0.002% to 0.005%, far below the standard measure of 0.5%.

This certification from a team of dermatologists gives us confidence in the safety and gentleness of our products. For us, aligning our thoughts and principles with our manufacturer is crucial.

We work closely with them to ensure that all ingredients are sourced from ethical suppliers. Our development team, mostly comprised of experts, thoroughly understands the features and benefits we envision for our products.

They then create prototypes based on our requirements, and we put them to the test – literally! We try out the samples on ourselves first, which can be a months-long process, as we strive for perfection. It’s not uncommon for us to go through multiple iterations before landing on the perfect formulation.

Once we’re satisfied with a sample, we send samples across to our friends and
family, at all different locations in the country, for more detailed feedback.

This step is invaluable, as everyone has unique skin types and needs. We gather insights from their experiences and make necessary adjustments.

Finally, when we launch a product, it’s our customers who give us the most honest feedback. While we can’t incorporate every suggestion, we do pay close attention to common themes and concerns.

Fortunately, our rigorous testing process, including safety and non-irritability assessments through a trusted agency, has ensured that our products have been well-received so far.

We’re committed to continuous improvement, always listening to our customers and striving to create products that truly make a difference in their lives.

What challenges did you encounter while establishing XYST Skincare, and how did you overcome them?

Gunjan Agarwal: Establishing XYST Skincare wasn’t without its challenges. Early on, we realized that our packaging and brand logo weren’t quite hitting the mark.

Feedback from well-meaning sources helped us identify the issue, and we took a bold step – we went back to the drawing board. We partnered with a design agency to revamp our look, which took around four months to finalize.

Simultaneously, we worked with a creative team to shoot new images and videos, which added another month to the process. It was a significant undertaking, but we were determined to get it right. We relaunched in February 2024, and it was worth the wait.

Another hurdle we faced was the production of our new products, particularly our SPF formula. We encountered a delay in sourcing a key ingredient that was crucial to its effectiveness.

This challenge took around eight months to overcome, and it delayed our launch by four months. However, we weren’t willing to compromise on quality.

Our dedication to delivering the best, most result-oriented products to our customers drove our decision-making process.

We prioritized getting it right over rushing to market. The extra time and effort were worth it, as we’re confident that our products will stand out and deliver the results our customers are looking for. It’s a testament to our commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.

What trends do you see emerging in the skincare industry, and how is XYST Skincare adapting to these changes?

Gunjan Agarwal: The skincare industry is rapidly evolving, driven by consumers who are becoming increasingly informed and discerning. At Xyst, we’re committed to staying in tune with our customers’ needs and preferences.

We listen attentively to their feedback and incorporate as many changes as possible, ensuring that our products meet their expectations.

Our brand is built on a foundation of ethics, with a deep respect for nature and a passion for harnessing the best ingredients from around the world. We’re dedicated to creating products that are not only effective but also safe and sustainable.

That’s why we’re 100% vegan, cruelty-free, and committed to using only the safest scientific ingredients that are free from toxins.

Every product is rigorously vetted for its safety and non-irritability, giving our customers peace of mind.

As the industry shifts towards sustainability and natural ingredients, we’re embracing this trend by incorporating eco-friendly packaging and developing products with plant-based ingredients.

Can you share your personal skincare routine and any favorite products from your line?

Gunjan Agarwal: As the founder of Xyst, I’ve always been driven by a singular vision: to create products that bring ultimate satisfaction to our consumers.

I should know, I’ve been using my own brand’s products since its inception! My day starts with a gentle routine that sets the tone for glowing, hydrated skin.

I begin with my mild foam face wash, infused with the goodness of cica leaves, which gently cleanses and calms my skin.

Next, I layer on my 10% Vitamin C serum, followed by a hyaluronic acid-infused day cream, and finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen – even on cloudy days or when I’m staying indoors. This routine makes me feel empowered, and my skin stays fresh and dewy all day long.

In the evening, I switch gears with a different routine. I cleanse my face with an exfoliating face wash that’s packed with fruit AHAs and vitamin C, which helps remove dead skin cells and reveal brighter skin.

Then, I apply a liposomal retinol-infused night cream, which deeply hydrates and nourishes my skin. A gentle massage with a natural caffeine under-eye cream seals the deal, leaving me feeling calm and relaxed after a busy day.

Recently, I’ve added some new products to my routine that have taken my skincare game to the next level.

My SPF 50 sunscreen with Radicare Gold is a game-changer – it protects my skin from the sun, blue light, WiFi emissions, and environmental stressors without leaving any oiliness or white cast. It’s become my go-to for stepping out with confidence, no matter the weather.

I also love my Age Lock Anti-Aging serum, which is formulated with ceramides and peptides that delay aging and strengthen my skin’s barrier.

And, my Dark Spot Corrector serum has been a miracle worker for stubborn dark spots and pigmentation – with Dermawhite reducing excess melanin production, I’ve seen a noticeable difference in just two weeks.

I could go on and on about each product, but the truth is, I love them all for their unique benefits. Each one has been carefully crafted to address specific skin concerns, and I’m thrilled to share them with our customers.

Gunjan Agarwal: As I look to the future, my ultimate goal for XYST Skincare is to make it a household name that resonates with consumers seeking effective, safe, and gentle skincare solutions. I’m excited to say that this goal is already in motion, and I’m confident that we’ll get there soon.

Once we’ve achieved this milestone, I plan to expand our product portfolio, introducing even more innovative and high-performance products that not only deliver exceptional results but also maintain our commitment to safety and non-irritability. In fact, we’ve already taken a significant step forward by launching three new products this month.

Our momentum is building, and we’re just getting started. Looking ahead, we’re eager to venture into new areas, including focused hair care. But we’re not interested in creating just any ordinary shampoos or conditioners.

Instead, we’re targeting chronic issues like dandruff, extreme hair fall, and balding – problems that can be life-altering for many people. By leveraging our expertise in skincare and our passion for innovation, we aim to bring effective solutions to these pressing hair care concerns.

In the next five years, I envision XYST Skincare as a leader in the industry, known for its commitment to quality, safety, and customer satisfaction.

We’ll continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible in skincare and hair care, always prioritizing the needs and well-being of our customers.

With a strong foundation, a clear vision, and a dedication to excellence, I’m confident that XYST Skincare will thrive and make a lasting impact in the world of beauty and wellness.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to enter the skincare or beauty industry?

Gunjan Agarwal: Just keep it simple! As someone who’s navigated the ups and downs of building a skincare brand, I’d say to aspiring entrepreneurs: don’t be afraid to dream big, but stay grounded in reality.

Understand your target audience inside out – their needs, desires, and pain points. Research is key: stay updated on industry trends, scientific breakthroughs, and regulatory requirements. Prioritize quality and safety above all else; your customers’ trust is paramount.

Be authentic and transparent – don’t make claims you can’t back up. Innovate and differentiate yourself from the crowd.

Build a strong brand identity that resonates with your audience. And when the going gets tough (and it will!), draw on your resilience and adaptability to pivot and overcome challenges.

Most importantly, stay true to your vision and values. Building a successful brand takes time, effort, and perseverance.
