Hima Das, Dhing Express Life Story & Biography, her Struggle, Records, and Achievements
Hima Das is also known as Dhung Express. She is an Indian sprinter from Assam. She holds the current Indian national record in 400 meters in 50.79 seconds at 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Hima Dasis the first Indian athlete to win gold medal in a track event at the IAAF World U20 Championship.
Under the state’s Integrates Sports Policy, she was appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Assam Police.
Early life:
Hima Das was born on 9th January 2000 at Kandhulimari village, near the town of Dhing in her home state of Assam. Ronjit Das is her father & Jonali Das is her mother.
They are farmer by profession. Das belongs to the Assamese family from the Kaibbarta community. She is the youngest to her five siblings.
Earlier she attended the Dhing Public High School & later after clearing the entrance exam in 5th class, she joined Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya. Initially she was interested in playing football.
She used to play with boys at JNV. At that time, she wanted to pursue career in football. However, she did not find opportunity for herself in women’s football scene in India.
Hima Das changed to sprint running after the advice of her school physical education teacher at JNV. In May 2019, she passed her 12th board exam. Currently, she is pursuing her B.A. in Cotton University, Assam.
Career:
She competed I the 2018 Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast, Australia in April 2018. She participated in the 400 meters & 4X400 meters relay.

Hima Das won the 400 m final at the World U-20 Championships 2018 held at Tampere, Finland, clocking 51.46 seconds. She became the first Indian sprinter to win a gold medal at an international track event on 12th July 2018.
Hima Das qualified for the 400 m final, after clocking 51.00 in heat 1 and setting a new Indian national record at the Asian Games in 2018.
Again on 26 August 2018 she improved the national record to 50.79 s in the 400 m final however she could win only the silver medal. Das, along with M. R. Poovamma, Sarita Gayakwad and V. K.
Vismaya won the women’s 4 × 400 meters’ relay clocking 3:28.72 on 30th August 2018. She also won a silver medal in the 4 × 400 m mixed relay.
It was held for the first time at Asian Games. She continued her success by winning the 200m gold in Poznan Grand Prix in Poland on 2nd July 2019.

She completed it with a time of 23.65 seconds. Again on 13th July, she won 200m gold at the Kladno Meet in the Czech Republic with a time of 23.43 seconds.
Hima Das earned her third gold in a month on 0th July. She achieved her 5th gold in her 400-meter race in Nové Město, Czech Republic completing the race.
In October 2019, she was named for the World Championships to be held at Doha. Unfortunately, she was ruled out of participation due to a back problem.
That problem was started right after she competed at the Asian games the previous year. Hima Das enrolled as a civil servant in the post of Deputy Superintendent of Police of Assam Police Service cadre through Assam Public Service Commission Direct Entry on 27th February 2021.
Awards and recognition:
- Hima Das received Arjuna Award by the President of India on 25 September 2018.
- On 1st November 2019, Das appeared in India’s famous TV reality-show conducted by actor Amitabh Bachchan called Kaun Banega Crorepati.
- In February 2021, Hima Das was Appointed as a civil servant under the post of Deputy Superintendent of Police in Assam Police Service cadre by Assam Public Service Commission without her appearing for the Combined Competitive Examination but through direct entry mode.
- After Bhogeswar Baruah, she is the second athlete to win a gold medal at an international level, she is the second athlete from Assam.
