India Is Fast Emerging As A Medical Tourism Hub; 10 Lakh Medical Visas Were Issued In 3 Years
November 18, 2022: Dr. Jitendra Singh said that between 2019 and 2022, over one million medical visas were issued to foreigners and the country is fast emerging as a medical tourism hub of the world.
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh said India has become one of the world’s most cost-effective healthcare destinations, deploying advanced technological tools in care delivery.
Addressing the Economic Times’ Healthcare Leaders Summit-2022, Dr. Jitendra Singh said that between 2019 and 2022, over one million medical visas were issued to foreigners and the country is fast emerging as the medical tourism hub of the world.
The number, he said, is noteworthy because there was an almost total ban on international travel during the pandemic.
The minister also pointed out that India has around 600 globally and nationally accredited hospitals that provide world-class treatment in a cost-effective manner.
The Union Minister further said that they expect the healthcare sector in India to grow to a size of $50 billion by 2025, while I estimated the global medical tourism market to be around $72 billion.
He said that by 2023, India’s share in medical tourism is expected to be around 10 billion dollars. In addition, the country is the world’s largest supplier of generic drugs; the minister added.
Focusing on the theme of the summit, “Building an Integrated Healthcare Ecosystem in India through Proactive Government Initiatives”, Dr. Singh pointed out that while inaugurating health facilities in Gujarat just last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said, “If the heart and mind of the government are not concerned with the problems of the people, then building a proper health infrastructure is not possible.”
The minister emphasized that the government’s intention and Policies are in perfect alignment to create affordable healthcare for all.
Dr. Since 2014, the Modi government has been harnessing the enthusiasm of scientific brilliance and taking on the most pressing healthcare challenges of the current generation and preparing for the future, Singh said.
Extensive efforts are also underway to build a robust life sciences ecosystem through science and research, which will reduce health disparities and create a clear road map to continued breakthroughs in vaccines, therapies, and diagnostics, he said.
He said the action plan set by the government to support healthcare stakeholders to create a vibrant healthcare ecosystem in the country is happening through funding, incentives, government and industry-academia partnerships, and incubation.
