India Is LinkedIn’s Fastest Growing Market Says CEO Ryan Roslansky
November 15, 2022: Compared to the rest of the world, members in India are over-indexing on networking, on messaging, on job search, on learning, which is unique, said Ryan Roslansky, who took over as LinkedIn CEO in 2020.
He shared that the top five skills in demand by employers in India are SQL, Java, HTML, C++ and Python.
Where do you go first when looking for a job? Perhaps, LinkedIn. At a time when social media giants like Twitter, Facebook, Snap are laying off large numbers of employees as part of their cost-cutting measures, a third social media company – LinkedIn – seems to be moving in the right direction.
The Microsoft-owned business has recently emerged as the go-to place for most laid-off employees. Laid-off employees take to LinkedIn to present their side of the story, requesting any help that can be offered in terms of jobs and new opportunities.
The use of the platform has grown here to the extent that India has become LinkedIn’s fastest growing market in terms of member growth and engagement.
India’s revenue has increased by 84 percent compared to two years ago. “Something really special is happening in India right now,” said CEO Ryan Roslansky.
Compared to the rest of the world, members in India are over-indexing on networking, on messaging, on job search, on learning, which is unique, Rozlansky, who took over as LinkedIn CEO in 2020, told ToI in a virtual conversation.
Talking about the skills-based approach that is emerging among recruiters, Roslansky explained that financial analysts in India who keep their skills up-to-date on their profiles receive five times more messages.
“In India, more than 50 percent of recruiters who search for candidates on LinkedIn include skills in their checklist to fill roles, which is actually a record high globally,” he shared.
He backs up the need for skills, saying that about a third of the skills needed for the job seven years ago have now changed. “On average, if you take the exact same job in India in 2015 and 2022, 30 percent of the skills required for that job have changed.
The good news is that both employees and employers are already starting to recognize the importance of skills,” noted Roslansky.
Currently, software engineers in India who keep and update skills on their LinkedIn profile receive eight times more messages from recruiters.
LinkedIn was acquired by Microsoft in 2016, when it was making about $3 billion in revenue. In the trailing 12 months, LinkedIn is making north of $14 billion in revenue, according to the company’s chief executive.
Top 5 Skills in Demand in India
Rozlansky also pointed out that they created a skills graph of the 38,000 skills that are most important in the LinkedIn graph of over 875 million members.
In India, the top five skills that are in demand from employers across the member base are SQL, Java, HTML, C++ and Python.
