As the driving force behind Flexiple, a tech talent network that connects companies with premier freelance developers and designers, Karthik brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the table. With a background deeply rooted in the dynamics of the gig economy, Karthik has played a pivotal role in reshaping how businesses access top-tier technical talent. Join us as we explore the fascinating journey, challenges, and vision of Karthik Sridharan in our exclusive interview.
The freelance industry is dynamic and ever-evolving. How do you stay ahead of the curve and ensure that Flexiple remains a leading platform for connecting companies with top-tier talent?
Karthik Sridharan: From the beginning of Flexiple’s journey, we have worked with our clients as partners rather than vendors. This allows us to stay close & updated to the evolving challenges of the market and to continuously grow along with it.
For example, we recognized early that competition for talent would be global not local. To address that, we had a specific focus to have our talent footprint across countries. Now, Flexiple has its talent pool in over 60 countries, enabling access to top-tier professionals worldwide.
Further, to maintain an edge in the dynamic freelance industry, at Flexiple we focus on adapting to the evolving tech sector trends.
Along with our core understanding of the problems our customers face, our love for technology enables us to carefully evaluate if any technology developments can further streamline the hiring processes of our clients. For example, over the past year, we have integrated AI in many interesting use cases for our clients to save significant time & effort.
Overall, Flexiple’s adaptability, global talent network, and innovative hiring solutions ensure its continued relevance as a leading platform in connecting companies with exceptional tech talent.
Flexiple emphasises the ability to hire freelance developers and designers within a remarkably short timeframe – 72 hours to 7 days. What strategies and processes does Flexiple employ to achieve such rapid and effective matches between clients and freelancers?
Karthik Sridharan: Flexiple achieves rapid matches between clients and freelancers through several key strategies, but it all starts with us having a vast and engaged network of 100,000+ developers. Therefore, we already have a thriving database of quality engineers to choose from.
Further, we’ve a comprehensive vetting process through which we vet and also collect unique data points on each engineer. On top of this goldmine, we have built solid tech that helps us in efficiently filtering candidates, expediting the hiring timeline to find the perfect fit.
Finally, Flexiple’s team mainly comprises engineers. Hence, we are able to derive a nuanced understanding of tech talent requirements from our clients, allowing for precise & handpicked candidate recommendations. This targeted approach ensures clients interact only with the most fitting prospects, enhancing the likelihood of successful matches.
Overall, Flexiple’s comprehensive solution, where we manage the entire hiring process from sourcing to evaluation to selection streamlines the entire hiring experience for companies.
In the gig economy, building trust between clients and freelancers is crucial. How does Flexiple approach the challenge of establishing and maintaining trust within its platform?
Karthik Sridharan: Flexiple tackles the challenge of building trust in the freelance economy by meticulously vetting its network of over 100,000 developers, ensuring clients access top-tier and reliable freelancers. This pre-screening for quality establishes an initial layer of trust based on the freelancers’ competence and dependability.
In addition, an important aspect is to ensure our stakeholders trust Flexiple. Flexiple’s partnership approach, as opposed to acting merely as a vendor, is a key contributor here. We do this by understanding a client’s needs deeply and offering handpicked freelancer recommendations, ensuring a good match for each project.
Further, during the execution of a project, our customer success has regular check-ins with both clients & freelancers to predict & solve for possible roadblocks. Having worked on numerous projects, our expertise helps in an industry-leading success rate.
Overall, keeping quality as the basis of our entire talent network combined with our consultative strategy to ensure our clients work with the right talent helps us achieve client satisfaction and quality that thereby lead to strong trust building in our network.
Can you highlight some success stories or notable experiences that showcase how Flexiple has positively impacted both freelancers and the companies seeking their services?
Karthik Sridharan: Flexiple has significantly impacted the tech talent landscape, having success stories of clients across various business stages. For early-stage startups like TurfTown and Reckit, Flexiple was crucial in building teams for their Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) and initial comprehensive products, laying the groundwork for their growth.
In the case of larger companies, such as Plivo and CertifyOS, Flexiple played a key role in flexibly scaling their teams, aligning with their evolving business needs. Additionally, for enterprises like ERM, Flexiple facilitated the expansion of digital capabilities, aiding in transitioning from a limited product range to a broader software suite.
These instances illustrate Flexiple’s ability to cater to diverse company needs, from foundational team building in startups to strategic talent integration in larger companies and enterprises, highlighting our value in the tech hiring sector.
On the freelancers side, we have worked with talent across countries to help them achieve their professional goals. This includes those who want to work remotely from small towns to stay closer to their family, to those wanting to get experience at high-growth startups and even those who want to consult while preparing for their entrepreneurial ventures.
The tech landscape is evolving rapidly. How does Flexiple ensure that the freelancers available on its platform possess the latest skills and expertise demanded by today’s tech industry?
Karthik Sridharan: Flexiple’s screening process has been carefully designed and improved over the past 7 years. The process evaluates candidates not only technically, but also aims to understand softer skillsets.
For example, on the technical evaluation, our screening includes multiple-choice questions for initial elimination, to more involved live coding simulation tests to assess the true technical capability of candidates.
Even while showcasing their work on the resume, our team works closely with talent to ensure any skill claimed is validated with a corresponding detailed explanation on the work done.
On the softer aspects, every talent is manually onboarded to understand softer aspects such as communication, motivation to freelance and more.
Beyond such measures, whenever any talent is mapped to a client, we trigger a background verification process to verify the details submitted to us.
Overall, Flexiple has consistently evolved its screening process to be relevant to the dynamic nature of the tech world, while also covering multiple other bases to ensure any match made through the platform between a client and freelancer is successful.
What criteria does Flexiple use to vet and onboard freelance developers and designers? How do you ensure a high level of quality and professionalism among the talent available on your platform?
Karthik Sridharan: Broadly in line with what is shared in the above response, Flexiple has a rigorous and multifaceted screening process to vet and onboard freelance developers and designers. This process, refined over 7 years, evaluates candidates both technically and in terms of softer skills.
1. Technical Evaluation: The process begins with multiple-choice questions for initial elimination, followed by more complex live coding simulation tests. These steps are designed to accurately assess the candidates’ technical capabilities. Additionally, Flexiple closely works with talent to validate each claimed skill on their resumes with detailed explanations of the work they have done.
2. Evaluation of Softer Skills: Beyond technical proficiency, Flexiple places significant emphasis on softer aspects such as communication skills and motivation for freelancing. Each talent is manually onboarded, allowing for a thorough understanding of these softer skillsets.
3. Background Verification: After a freelancer is matched with a client, Flexiple conducts a background verification process to confirm the details provided by the talent.
Overall, Flexiple’s screening process is dynamic & constantly evolving to remain relevant in the fast-changing tech world. This comprehensive approach ensures that the matches made on their platform between clients and freelancers are successful, maintaining a high standard of quality and professionalism.
Flexiple places a strong emphasis on remote work. In light of the global shift towards remote and distributed teams, how has Flexiple adapted to meet the changing needs of both freelancers and clients?
Karthik Sridharan: At Flexiple, while we didn’t predict such a huge shift to remote work (post COVID), we definitely betted on the growth of remote work since 2017. With that in mind, from inception we have been building a talent network that leverages the best talent across the globe rather than restricting ourselves to a specific geography.
As a consequence, our talent pool spans 60+ countries, which has enabled us to find the best talent globally for any client requirement, rather than having to force fit local talent blindly.
Further, having worked on a vast number of projects with freelancers and clients, we have deeply codified our learnings. These learnings have been infused as improvements to our product or process across our talent screening process, client expectations alignment, customer success initiatives and more.
What challenges have you encountered while building and scaling Flexiple, and how have you overcome them?
Karthik Sridharan: As one would expect, we have encountered multiple challenges while building Flexiple. It all started as we realized that for our offering of freelancers (we also have a vertical to hire full-time engineers) our target market was the US. Building our presence in the US while being based out of India was a very tough challenge. However, we have worked on marketing and have a strong presence on SEO, social media and relevant communities.
On the talent side, expanding beyond the local talent pool to building a global talent pool has also been a difficult but enriching experience. This has required building a strong brand in the freelance/remote community and to add value with helpful content on our website.
Further, the tech landscape is ever-changing with new technologies always trending. From new software development frameworks to technologies Blockchain or Artificial Intelligence, the tech industry is always on the move. To consistently deliver value to our customers, we have had to update our knowledge, product and processes.
Finally, tech hiring is a highly dynamic industry overall. So, we have worked closely with our customers to continuously gain a better understanding of their challenges. To address these challenges, we are always on the look-out to track the latest developments in the tech world and to find innovative solutions that could be integrated into our product.
In a competitive landscape, what sets Flexiple apart from other platforms that connect companies with freelance talent?
Karthik Sridharan: Let’s first set the context of the hiring industry. Hiring typically has three parts: Sourcing, Evaluation and final Selection. In today’s fast-paced business environment, each company faces enough of a battle in their core offering. They therefore cannot, and also should not, spend significant bandwidth in hiring.
That’s where Flexiple comes in as a 1-stop hiring solution. We enable companies to fully offload their tech hiring process to us. We take on all the responsibility of sourcing talent, evaluating them and giving handpicked matches for each role.
Further, not just the depth, but we are able to cover a wide range of requirements, be it full-time or contract, remote or on-site work, across all expertise levels and technologies.
We are able to do this because of our vast & engaged talent network, our robust evaluation process that blends automation with expert assessments and also solid final talent matching. This end-to-end approach to solving the hiring problem, combined with our model of working as a partner with companies makes Flexiple a preferred choice for tech hiring.
Overall, we will continue to stay true to our goal of helping companies build dream teams on auto-pilot.
In conclusion, our conversation with Karthik Sridharan has illuminated the transformative power of technology and the gig economy in reshaping the workforce landscape. As the Co-Founder and CEO of Flexiple, Karthik’s journey is not just a narrative of success but a testament to the importance of adaptability and innovation in the rapidly changing world of remote work.
His insights into the dynamics of hiring freelance developers and designers provide a valuable perspective for both entrepreneurs and freelancers alike. We extend our gratitude to Karthik for sharing his time, wisdom, and vision, and we look forward to witnessing the continued growth and impact of Flexiple in the tech talent ecosystem.
