An Exclusive Interview with Kushal Raj Chakravorty, Founder of Lotus Petal Foundation
Kushal Raj Chakravorty, Founder of Lotus Petal Foundation, has dedicated his journey to transforming lives through education, healthcare, and nutrition.
In this interview, he shares the vision that inspired the foundation, the challenges faced, and the impact created in empowering underprivileged children with opportunities for a brighter, dignified future.
What inspired the creation of Lotus Petal Foundation, and how has the mission evolved since you first started?
Kushal Raj Chakravorty: The Eureka moment came in 2011, on a cold winter morning, when I was dropping my children at the bus stop to go to school. And, I saw a few children walking barefoot in that chilly weather, lacking basic necessities.
It was a stark wake-up call to the inequality around me and made me realize that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive. That moment led to the creation of the Lotus Petal Foundation.
We began with just a few teachers and volunteers who shared a deep belief in the potential of every child. As the foundation grew, we placed strong emphasis on alignment with our vision and cultural fit during the onboarding process.
Since inception in 2011 with just six children in a single classroom, Lotus Petal Foundation has grown significantly.
Currently, the organisation is working with a strength of 240+ employees. To date, our journey has impacted around 29,44,572 lives across various programs.
We have successfully scaled programs across multiple states, partnering with government bodies, schools, and corporates to extend the impact. This growth reflects both the demand for interventions and our ability to deliver results.
Which programmes (education, nutrition, counselling, etc.) do you find make the biggest difference in a child’s life? Can you share a specific success story that exemplifies this?
Kushal Raj Chakravorty: Education continues to be the strongest force that transforms and makes a difference in a child’s life.
One such program that has created a remarkable impact in empowering students with fractured learning backgrounds is the Pratisthan Learning Centre (PLC), a fast-track learning program.
Designed specifically for school dropouts and students with low learning levels, the program enables them to complete their school education in just five years.
A notable success story from this program is that of our alumnus, Saloni Raj. She joined the Pratisthan Learning Centre at the age of 14, demonstrating the learning levels of a 4th-grade student.
With dedicated focus and support, Saloni was able to complete her 12th-grade examinations and at the age of 20 she was able to clear the NEET exam. Today, she is Dr. Saloni Raj.
The program was recognized with the DL Shah Quality Award 2022 (Silver Category) by the Quality Council of India.
Saloni, our very first student, has already gone on to become a doctor, and there are many more such lives that continue to be transformed through education at the Lotus Petal Foundation.
What are the biggest challenges the foundation faces whether logistical, financial, or societal and how have you adapted or innovated to overcome them?
Kushal Raj Chakravorty: For an organization to grow to this scale, challenges are inevitable. ensuring quality and sustainability. As our reach expands, maintaining the same level of program excellence, individual attention to each child, and everyone’s alignment with the vision becomes increasingly complex.
At Lotus Petal Foundation, we address this challenge by building a strong institutional framework anchored in processes, systems, and continuous learning. We invest significantly in capacity building, providing extensive training to all changemakers (employees) to ensure we all work towards a common vision.
Technology also plays a pivotal role enabling real-time monitoring, data-driven decision-making, and personalized learning experiences even as we scale.
Additionally, we work on building strategic partnerships with corporates, donors, and ecosystem players, which strengthens our financial sustainability and infrastructure support.
How do you involve parents, local communities, donors, and government bodies in your work? What role does their support play?
Kushal Raj Chakravorty: At Lotus Petal Foundation, collaboration with all stakeholders is central to our impact. Parents and local communities are actively engaged in their children’s education and overall well-being, fostering trust and ensuring that learning continues beyond the classroom.
Donors—ranging from corporates through CSR, philanthropic foundations, and individuals—play a pivotal role by enabling us to deliver high-quality programs in education, nutrition, and livelihood.
Government bodies are vital partners, as many of our initiatives such as the Vidya Sahyog program and CBSE-affiliated Lotus Petal Senior Secondary School align closely with national priorities for quality education and skill development.
Looking ahead, what are your key goals for expanding or deepening your work over the next 3-5 years? How do you ensure that the impact is sustainable?
Kushal Raj Chakravorty: I see that the education sector, including not-for-profit organisations, moving rapidly toward digital solutions and hybrid models that seamlessly blend in-person and virtual learning.
Artificial intelligence will be central to this evolution, enabling personalized learning pathways, adaptive assessments, and data-driven support for teachers.
For children from underserved backgrounds, this shift will be transformative, helping bridge learning gaps at scale and deliver individualized support even in resource-limited environments.
Our conversation with Kushal Raj Chakravorty highlights how compassion, determination, and vision can create lasting change. Through Lotus Petal Foundation, he continues to provide hope and opportunity for countless children.
His story serves as an inspiring reminder that one individual’s commitment can truly transform lives and ignite a movement for social equity.
