Leena Tewari, the Third Wealthiest Woman in India and a Media-reluctant Pharma Magnate

Leena Tewari, the media-shy heir of a pharmaceutical company and the 790th richest person in the world as of Thursday, February 16, is currently the third richest woman in India.

She is the chairwoman of the privately held USV India, which her late father Vithal Gandhi founded in 1961 alongside Revlon.

The 65-year-old businesswoman was ranked 778th among the richest billionaires in the world in 2022 according to Forbes’ list of the richest people in India.

Tewari is India’s third richest lady, just behind politician and woman entrepreneur Savitri Jindal and late ‘Big Bull’ Rakesh Jhunjhunwala‘s wife Rekha Jhunjhunwala.

Forbes pegs her current net worth at $3.7 billion, or more than Rs 30,000 crore, as of February 16, 2023.

Savitri Jindal is the richest Indian woman with a net worth of $17 billion (Rs 1,40,659 crore), and Rekha Jhunjhunwala is second with a fortune of $5.9 billion.

She had a net worth of $1.7 billion in 2016, which rose to $2 billion in 2017. Tewari’s net worth continued to soar, reaching $2.4 billion in 2018, but it slightly declined to $1.9 billion in 2019 and stayed almost the same in 2020.

Leena Tewari’s net worth was $3.5 billion in 2021 before reaching $3.8 billion in 2022. Tewari, a mother of two, earned a B.Com from the University of Bombay and an MBA from Boston University. She explores Indian forests because she likes animals.

Tewari is the chairman of USV India, which specialises on diabetic and cardiovascular medications and has a portfolio that includes injectables, active pharmaceutical ingredients, and biosimilar medications.

Her husband, Prashant, a mechanical engineer from Cornell and a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology, is the CEO of the $511 million (sales) business.

In 2018, the pharmaceutical company paid an unknown price to buy the German generics company Juta Pharma.

Aneesha Gandhi Tewari, who holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology from MIT, was named to the board of USV in August 2022.

She is Tewari’s daughter. Vilas, a board member of USV and the founder of a gaming company in Los Angeles, is her son.
