Can you share with us your journey and how you decided to start Zero Zero?
Manan Gandhi: I started the niche perfumery brand Bombay Perfumery back in 2016 with the idea of putting Indian perfumery on the global map.
As part of sourcing for the perfumery naturals, I realised that there is a market here in India for good quality, unadulterated 100% natural essential oils which I can provide because of our expertise and ability to source directly from farmers across the world.
Most of the essential oil brands in the market presently are not 100% natural and cannot guarantee authenticity or quality.
I really wanted to change that by offering the consumer access to 100% natural oils which are vegan and source ethically.
That was my inspiration behind starting and naming the brand ZERO ZERO which stands for zero adulteration or impurity and 100% guarantee of authenticity.
What inspired you to start the brand, particularly focusing on the beauty industry?
Manan Gandhi: Essential oils have long been misunderstood as oils that can only be used for aromatherapy or for diffusion, however, our oils have diverse uses that span across health, beauty and ambient scenting.
ZERO ZERO essential oils can easily be added to your existing beauty regimen either as bath oils or you can add a small amount to your moisturizers for enhanced skin benefits.
Our range also comprises of carrier oils like coconut and avocado and argan oil which are rich in fatty acids so they great for your hair and help with reducing hair loss and improve texture and strength. These also work as all natural makeup removers which soothe the skin, leaving it less irritable.
Could you describe the Zero Zero Selling proposition (USP) within your industry?
Manan Gandhi: ZERO ZERO essential oils are 100% natural, sourced directly and ethically from farmers across the world. Each oil comes with its own authenticity certificate guaranteeing the consumer an authentic purchase, something which no other essential oils brand can claim.
These come in attractive, travel friendly packaging with detailed information on sourcing and provenance, ensuring the consumer is making an educated purchase and gets value for their money.
Can you discuss any challenges you’ve faced in marketing and how you’ve overcome them?
Manan Gandhi: The essential oils market is cluttered and comprises of many brands at different price points, which makes it a little confusing for the end consumer.
It’s a challenge to break into an existing market, particularly when it comprises of several brands that claim authenticity at cheap costs, it’s difficult to convince the consumer about the benefits and authenticity of your brand.
We’re trying to overcome these challenges with consumer advocacy via social media and with the help of credible beauty influencers who understand this space.
We’re also focusing on a retail approach where the product is easily accessible to the end consumer across multiple touchpoints, whether on apps or in person so that they will be better able to understand the brand promise once they have had a chance to use it
How does your brand implement ethical practices?
Manan Gandhi: We source directly from farmers across the world at a fair price and ensure that we bottle only 100% natural essential oils, which are free of any adulteration. Each oil comes with its own authenticity certificate which a consumer can download on purchase of the oil.
Future vision and expansion plans of the brand?
Manan Gandhi: Future plans include a multi city retail outreach across retail outlets that focus on health and beauty as well as online platforms which are well recognised in the beauty and wellness space India.
What are your success tips for young and aspiring entrepreneurs?
Manan Gandhi: Be clear about your brand positioning and stay true to the product promise because clever marketing cannot disguise a bad product, so put your money where it matters, into building robust business practices that will ensure that your product delivers on it’s promise for a long time.
