Who doesn’t know Manish Malhotra, but very few people know the success story of how he achieved this fame and his dream.
Manish Malhotra is an Indian fashion designer. He is a costume designer & stylist. He is widely known for his works in Telugu cinema, Bollywood, Hollywood, Tamil cinema & television.
Early life & Education:
Manish was born on 5th December 1966 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. His father’s name is Suraj Malhotra & his nephew’s name is Punit Malhotra. He completed his graduation from Elphinstone College, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.
Entrepreneurial Journey:
Manish ventured into modelling & runway fashion designing with his couture Reverie-Manish Malhotra in 1998.
In November 1999, he debuted at first runway show. His hard work finally paid off and he got his first big break at the age of 25.
Launched first label
He launched his couture label Manish Malhotra that offers bridal, couture, diffusion and men’s wear collections and retails at two stores in Mumbai and New Delhi in 2005.
His label also retails at multi-brand boutiques in Dubai & across India. He has been reported to be inspired by Indian craftsmanship.
Manish Malhotra used to promote regional handicrafts and workmanship from rural India. He does it in association with the ‘Mijwan Welfare Society’. Mijwan is an NGO founded by late Kaifi Azmi, it is headed by Shabana Azmi & Namrata Goyal.
Thread of Emotion
The Philadelphia Museum of Art featured outfits from the Manish Malhotra 2013 couture collection named Thread of Emotion, in a proceeding retrospective spotlighting the Phulkari technique at their Joan Spain Gallery in March 2017.
Manish Malhotra contributed to the India’s largest NGO twice, once in 2013 & again in 2016. He celebrated 100 years of Indian Cinema at the ARTiculate the Pratham Ball 2013, at London.
There he raised 3,00,000 pounds for the Indian Education Charity. During that event, his collection was inspired by three main epoch of the Indian Cinema, spanning from 1913 to 2013.
His collection took the audience back to black & white epoch of “Mughal-E-Azam” and “Awara”.
In Houston:
Again, on 23 April 2016, at the Pratham’s Annual Gala, held at Houston, Manish Malhotra raised $1.8 million to eliminare illiteracy in India.
With Angel! Foundation (London):
Manish Malhotra made his UK catwalk debut at a fundraiser in aid of Angel foundation, in association with Rivaage Boutique.
It was held at The Grosvenore House Hotel, London. Manish selected Angel Foundation as the charity of choice for his UK launch.
It was to highlight the shocking inequality and attitude towards women in India.
Actually, Angel Foundation is a charity, which works towards empowerment of Women in India.
Muscat Fashion Show:
Manish along with 20 models from Mumbai highlighted his latest creations and couture in a binding show on 20th February 2014.
That show was in association with Oman Cancer Association and Dar Al’ Atta’a to support cancer awareness.
The show was held at the lawns of the Intercontinental Muscat. They RO20, 000 rose during the event, & donated it to the Oman Cancer Association.
Through that show, he brought India’s regal heritage with the royalty in chiffon saris, flowing anarkalis, kalidar lehengas and double-breasted bandhgalas.
Save The Tiger Telethon Campaign:
In March 2010, NDTV & Aircel embarked “Save Our Tiger” campaign by telecasting a 12-hour non-stop program from 11 am to 11 pm.
Manish Malhotra was one of the generous donors like Amitabh Bachchan, Priya Dutt, Diya Mirza etc. Together they rose about Rs. 10 cr. & had a great impact on the policies.
WEvolve Blue Runway:
In 2015, Manish introduced a new dimension to his summer collection with ‘The Blue Runway’ at the Jabong Lakme Fashion Week.
It was in association with the WEvolve campaign and World Bank as the partner. WEvolve is a global campaign to bringing men and women together to end inequality by using the power of art and media to inspire action and change.
That collection was designed to wear in any part of the world with the women’s line including flawy gowns, jacket-saris, off-shoulder and halter crop tops, and skirts as and long shirts in structured and easy styles.
Honor Role by CRY America:
Malhotra made contribution towards underprivileged children their basic rights. He donated Manish Malhotra garment at the CRY gala dinner in 2017.
Shabana Azmi, Sophie Choudry, Huma Qureshi, Athiya Shetty, Tara Sharma, Kajol, Riya Sen, Tisca Chopra etc. walked the ramp for noble cause.
Associate with Kashmiri Craftsmen:
In 2012, he worked towards promoting the regional handicrafts of India. For that he associated with craftsmen of Kashmir, who can create embroideries for his label.
He created the Kashmiri Heritage Collection that was showcased on the third day of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week.
Adopt Mijwan Welfare Society to promote Mijwan’s female’s craftsmanship
Since his very first show, Manish was involved with Mijwan Welfare Society. Kaifi Azmi founded that to promote the village based small-scale industries and supports it with marketing skills and strategies founded Mijwan Welfare Society.
It also facilitates viable self-employment. The women of the Mijwan village have sustained themselves by learning chikankari embroidery.
Malhotra transferred it into his signature Indian wear. In 1994, Kaifi Azmi Embroidery & Sewing centre was started & in 2010, Manish Malhotra adopted it.
To promote Mijwan’s female’s craftsmanship, Malhotra showcased his 2012 Mijwan collection at India fashion week held at Grand Hyatt Mumbai.
At the completion of 4-years of working with Mijwan Welfare Society, he put up a show on 4th April 2014.
Five parent-child duos acted as showstoppers there. They were Amitabh Bachchan and Shweta Nanda, Anil and Sonam Kapoor, Shatrugan and Sonakshi Sinha, Jaya and Abhishek Bachchan, and Javed and Farhan Akhtar.
For his 6th Mijwan show at The Grand Hyatt, Mumbai Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma walked the ramp.
Support save The Girl Child Campaign:
On 11th April 2012, Manish Malhotra put up a show to support the ‘Save & Empower The Girl Child’ campaign held at JW Marriott in Mumbai, where many celebrities walked the ramp with their daughters.
The collection was based on traditional India crafts like Chikankari and Kashmiri embroidery.
He put up a show to support the campaign ‘Save the Girl Child’ at the Lilavati hospital, Mumbai.
Bollywood divas Madhuri Dixit Nene, Malaika Arora Khan, Mandira Bedi, and Lara Dutta walked the ramp for him for the noble cause.
Notable Projects of Manish Malhotra:
In late 1990s, he worked on a traditional outfit design for Michael Jackson, during his visit to India.
He also designed outfits for Jean-Claude Van Damme, Reese Witherspoon in Mira Nair’s Vanity Fair, Kylie Minogue, and Jermaine Jackson and wife Halima.
Even he made the wedding outfit for princess Riyadh. In August 2016, Etihad Airways shot his show for Lakme fashion week’s winter-festive edition for a Virtual Reality fashion experience.
Earlier in January 2017, the virtual reality video was released at Etihad’s Innovation Centre in Abu Dhabi.

Malhotra collaborated with interior designer Seetu Kohli to create his first home ware line in October 2019. The collection was named Manish Malhotra Mansion.
