Can you tell us about your journey into the cybersecurity field and what inspired you to become an ethical hacker and cybersecurity professional?

Mayank Gandhi: Like many people, I come from a lower middle-class background. My father made a living as a vegetable seller. My dream was to pursue a career in ethical hacking, but the high costs in this field seemed insurmountable due to our limited funds. In a stroke of determination, I borrowed an old laptop from my maternal uncle, a hand-me-down of eight years.

I embarked on my journey into cybersecurity by accessing free online resources. Along the way, I discovered a significant issue – the high expense of education in this field. Many aspiring cybersecurity enthusiasts faced this same barrier, having the desire but not the means to start.

As time passed, I excelled in Bug Bounty, and it became evident that there were many students eager to dive into cybersecurity, but they lacked guidance and financial resources to begin. This realization led me to become a freelance instructor, offering affordable mentorship to help others get started.

My journey eventually led me to establish TMG Security, a platform with a mission to provide accessible cybersecurity education to students and newcomers. We aim to make learning about pentesting, bug bounty, and various cybersecurity areas affordable for everyone.

With over 250 companies secured under your belt, what would you say are the most common vulnerabilities or threats you encounter in today’s digital landscape?

Mayank Gandhi: In my tenure spanning four to five years in bug bounty hunting, I’ve had the privilege of uncovering numerous critical vulnerabilities across a spectrum of organizations, including government entities and private corporations.

Through these experiences, I’ve observed that a significant portion of vulnerabilities stem from either oversight in the development process or a lack of awareness among users and administrators regarding cybersecurity best practices.

One recent instance exemplifies this trend vividly: I identified a critical flaw within the systems of a prominent company, impacting over 100,000 users. This vulnerability exposed sensitive information such as invoices, personal identification numbers, addresses, and financial details, including credit and debit card information.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, I promptly reported the issue to the company, adhering to ethical standards. As a result, I received acknowledgment and a reward from the organization.

This case underscores the pivotal role that diligence, expertise, and ethical conduct play in safeguarding digital assets and maintaining the integrity of systems in today’s dynamic threat landscape. Moving forward, I remain committed to leveraging my skills and experience to fortify digital ecosystems against emerging cyber threats.

As both a cybersecurity professional and trainer, what are the key principles or strategies you emphasize to your clients or students for maintaining robust cybersecurity measures?

Mayank Gandhi: As both a seasoned cybersecurity professional and dedicated trainer, I prioritize staying abreast of the latest threats and vulnerabilities that emerge daily in our rapidly evolving technological landscape. Recognizing the dynamic nature of cybersecurity, I emphasize to my clients and students the critical importance of ongoing education and vigilance in the face of evolving cyber threats.

Having had the privilege of imparting knowledge to over 10,000 students worldwide, I am deeply committed to empowering individuals with the skills and insights necessary to navigate the complexities of cybersecurity effectively.

By instilling a deep understanding of cybersecurity principles and practices among employees, organizations can significantly reduce the likelihood of successful cyberattacks and mitigate potential risks effectively.

What are some emerging trends or technologies in cybersecurity that you find particularly promising or concerning for businesses?

Mayank Gandhi: The digital space offers immense opportunities for brands to grow their businesses on a large scale. However, one of the biggest challenges I see for companies today is earning and maintaining user trust and consent.

As a cybersecurity company, we prioritize security because users are becoming increasingly aware of when and to whom they should provide their data. People understand that data holds immense power, often more than money. If money is lost, it can be earned back, but when data is compromised, there may be no way to undo the damage.

What advice would you give to aspiring cybersecurity professionals who are looking to make an impact in the field, especially in terms of ethical hacking and securing companies against cyber threats?

Mayank Gandhi: And Yes, Most important thing I have some advice for those aspiring to start a career in Cybersecurity. I recommend following a structured path. Begin by learning about networking, then delve into operating systems. It’s important to take the proper steps.

If you’re planning to enter bug bounty or penetration testing, patience is key. Don’t rush to find high-value bugs or chase bounties. Avoid shortcuts; this field demands diligence.
