Aritra Mukherjee

This Apeejay alumnus shares his story, insights, and advice for aspiring journalists.

By Arijit Roy: In an informal conversation,  Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication (AIMC) alumnus Aritra Mukherjee talks about his work, alma mater, career journey, and future ambitions.

Working as an Assistant News Editor at Hindustan Times, Aritra opens up on his motivations, moments that shaped him and offers top industry advice.

Could you start by sharing a bit about your role at Hindustan Times? What does your day-to-day look like as an Assistant News Editor?

Aritra Mukherjee: I’m currently with Hindustan Times Digital, working as an Assistant News Editor. My focus is on sports reporting and editing. My responsibilities include covering sporting events, interviewing athletes, and diving deep into their lives both on and off the field.

What first drew you to a career in sports journalism?

Aritra Mukherjee: Well, it’s a bit of a twist! I was a cricketer who didn’t quite make it professionally, so this became my way to stay close to the game I love. I’ve always been a sports fanatic, and over time, I found a passion for storytelling. So, blending both just felt natural, and here I am—very lucky to turn my passion into a profession.

How did your time at AIMC shape your career and who you are today?

Aritra Mukherjee: AIMC has always had a practical, hands-on approach. The real-world exposure and field experience I got during those 11 months were instrumental in helping me build a solid foundation. It prepared me for the real dynamics of journalism.

Did you secure your first job through campus placement? How did AIMC prepare you for it?

Aritra Mukherjee: Yes, I was placed at a leading English news channel even before my course ended. I went through four interviews and had offers from three of them. It’s really about both the student and the institute working together. AIMC provided the platform, and I made the most of it.

Looking ahead, where do you see yourself in the future? Any specific career goals?

Aritra Mukherjee: That’s a big question! Honestly, there’s still so much to learn and achieve. I’d say my main goal is to keep learning and growing, no matter where I am.

What was campus life like at Apeejay?

Aritra Mukherjee: Oh, it was fantastic! If only reels were around then, our social media would have told the whole story. It was my first time away from home, but the professors, friends, and overall vibe at Apeejay made it a really fun and memorable experience.

Finally, any advice for students hoping to break into journalism?

Aritra Mukherjee: Absolutely—read as much as you can and really listen to others. Reading helps you write better, and listening helps you speak better. Our profession is built on communication and storytelling, so these skills are everything.
