On 27th June, Sense India is launching Messengers On Cycles- a nationwide Cyclothon to celebrate the indomitable spirit of Helen Keller on her 141st Birth Anniversary.
An expected 2000+ cyclists all across the country will ride for inclusion, education and support for children and adults with deafblindness.
Ahmedabad: Over 2,000 cyclists will cover the mammoth distance of 1880 Kms- signifying the birth year of Helen Keller. Spanned across six months this cyclothon will celebrate Helen Keller’s life and raise awareness on deafblindness within the country.
This event will be a spectacular show of support to an estimated 5,00,000 persons with deafblindness across India dealing with the pandemic.
For the past 6 years, Sense India has been organising this sensitization and awareness drive in Ahmedabad to spread awareness on deafblindness a unique and complex disability, to support people with deafblindness into mainstream society.
This year, with the pandemic pushing us inside our homes, this cyclothon offers a getaway challenge to discover the roads not taken.
The pandemic has come with the opportunity to take this event national for anyone from across the country to come in support of people with deafblindness.
“This year we have collaborated with YouTooCanRun and SBC3 to take the celebrations global. We are excited for the launch of this year’s Messengers on Cycles event, which is spread across 6 months!” – Akhil Paul, Executive Director of Sense International India

About Helen Keller: Helen Keller (1880-1968) became deafblind in early childhood. An American, she was the first deafblind person to earn a BA degree, become an author and a
Political activist on various causes. In 1887, she met her teacher, Anne Sullivan, who began to teach Helen Keller to communicate by spelling words into her hand.
Helen Keller is an inspiration for deafblind, and persons who work with them – all over the world. She was arguably the world’s most well-known person with deafblindness, and the first to gain quality education by overcoming her deafblindness.
Helen Keller showed the world that deafblind people can do great things. She wrote many books; most famous one is ‘The Story of My Life’. We feel, through this ride, not only are we celebrating her spirit, spreading awareness about this unique disability, we will be truly participating in what she fought so hard to achieve for people with deafblindness – equality, inclusion and respect.
About Sense India: 500,000 people in India are unable to both see and hear. Deafblindness is a unique disability that combines hearing and visual impairment, making mobility, learning, communication and understanding extremely difficult.
