Mukesh Ambani builds on record cricket views with film, TV offerings
April 16, 2023: Successful Indian entrepreneur Mukesh Ambani‘s streaming service, JioCinema, is set to bolster its offerings with the addition of over 100 films and TV series, capitalizing on the success of its cricket broadcasts in a bid to take on global competitors like Walt Disney Co. and Netflix Inc. in India’s rapidly growing streaming market.
The platform will begin charging for its content as part of the expansion, although the specifics of its pricing strategy are still being determined, according to Jyoti Deshpande, President of media and content business.
The new titles are expected to be rolled out before the end of the Indian Premier League cricket tournament next month, and viewers will continue to have free access to matches until that time, Deshpande added.
Indian successful entrepreneur and business magnate Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries, is expanding his media empire with new film and TV offerings.
The move comes after his streaming platform, JioTV, broke records for its coverage of the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament.
According to reports, Ambani plans to launch a new movie production unit under Reliance Entertainment, which will create a range of Bollywood films for Indian audiences.
The company is also said to be developing a series of original TV shows, which will be released exclusively on its JioTV+ platform.
The move is seen as part of Ambani’s broader strategy to build a dominant position in India’s media landscape.
In recent years, he has invested heavily in digital content, with the goal of capturing a larger share of India’s rapidly growing streaming market.
Reliance Jio, the telecom arm of Reliance Industries, has already disrupted the Indian telecom market by offering cheap data and voice plans, as well as JioTV, which has emerged as a leading player in the Indian streaming market.
The platform recently set a new record for live viewership with over 462 million views during the IPL cricket tournament.
With the launch of its new film and TV offerings, Reliance Entertainment is expected to compete with other major players in the Indian media market, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar.
As the company continues to expand its media empire, it could have a major impact on the future of the Indian entertainment industry.
