All You Need To Know about Parliament of India – New Parliament Building

The New Parliament Building is a significant architectural and political landmark located in New Delhi, India.

It serves as the home of the Parliament of India, the supreme legislative body of the country. The construction of the new building is a symbol of India’s commitment to democracy, modernization, and nation-building.

The idea to construct a new Parliament Building emerged due to the growing needs and limitations of the existing structure, the Parliament House.

The Parliament House, which was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker and completed in 1927, had become inadequate to accommodate the increasing number of members of Parliament (MPs) and lacked modern facilities to support legislative functions.

The new building project was initiated to address these concerns and provide a state-of-the-art facility that would meet the requirements of a 21st-century parliamentary institution.

The architectural design of the new building was awarded through an international competition, won by the renowned architect Bimal Patel.

His design incorporates elements of Indian culture, heritage, and democracy while embracing a contemporary aesthetic.

The New Parliament Building aims to be a sustainable and energy-efficient structure. It will be equipped with modern amenities and technologies, including advanced audio-visual systems, translation facilities, and digital connectivity to enhance the legislative processes and enable effective communication among MPs.

The building’s design features a circular shape, symbolizing the continuity of the democratic process, with a grand central dome and three semi-domes representing the three branches of the government: the legislature, executive, and judiciary.

The domes are inspired by the Ashoka Chakra, the national emblem of India, and reflect the unity and integrity of the nation.

The interior of the new building will house spacious chambers for the Lok Sabha (House of the People) and Rajya Sabha (Council of States), the two houses of the Indian Parliament.

The chambers will be equipped with modern seating arrangements, technological infrastructure, and facilities to support efficient legislative proceedings.

The New Parliament Building is part of a larger Central Vista Redevelopment Project, which aims to transform the Central Vista area in New Delhi into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly space.

The project includes the construction of new government offices, public spaces, and cultural institutions, while preserving the historical landmarks and architectural heritage of the area.

The completion of the New Parliament Building and the Central Vista Redevelopment Project is expected to strengthen India’s democratic institutions, enhance the efficiency of parliamentary functioning, and provide a modern and iconic representation of the country’s governance system.

It will serve as a physical embodiment of India’s democratic values and aspirations, contributing to the nation’s growth and development in the years to come.
