An interview with Nitika Arora, Interior Designer & Founder of The Design Salad

Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to become an interior designer?
Nitika Arora: Born and raised in Delhi, I have acquired my Bachelors in Interior Design through Chelsea College of Arts (University of Arts, London), MA in Design Management from BIAD (Birmingham City University, UK) and a MBA in Global Business from Coventry University (UK).
I got my creative bone from my mother and construction knowledge from my father. My love for design started sprouting from the time I was searching for the right college to uplift my skills.
What attracted you to the Gillco Palms project specifically?
Nitika Arora: The brief was to make this 2bhk keeping in mind the small, cozy, minimal European style apartment. It instantly got my attention and I wanted to know more about what the client had in mind.
What themes or styles are you considering for this project?
Nitika Arora: The theme we chose where keeping the functionality of a small family in mind and how well they wanted to experiment with different ideas we had in mind for their space.
Can you walk us through your design process for this project?
Nitika Arora: So after our first meeting we had a very specific theme in mind and the words like Parisian, modern, minimal and cozy went up on our discussion board instantly.
We started looking for the right reference put up a concept in place for the project. In our second meeting we discussed briefly as to what we had in mind and once the client was convinced with our proposal we went straight into creative working drawings and 3D’s for the space.
Once all the approvals were in place we handed over the documents for the execution process to kick start.
What are the key elements you focus on when designing a residential space like Gillco Palms?
Nitika Arora: Its always best to keep things simple and clutter free. Functionality plays a key role in small spaces and minimalism plays a greater role in aesthetics. We used different pastel tones to make it fun and welcoming.
What challenges do you anticipate in this project, and how do you plan to address them?
Nitika Arora: While working on the project we encountered various challenges like finding the right furniture that worked best for the aesthetics. A lot of inbuilt storage spaces were created.
Are there any innovative materials or technologies you plan to use in this project?
Nitika Arora: We have used light fixtures with dimmers and sensor lamp for night times in bedrooms. As we conclude our conversation, Nitika Arora’s passion for creating beautiful, functional spaces shines through.
