Parag Agrawal, the former CTO of twitter, handled issues such as racism row over a picture-cropping algorithm and large-scale password security.

Who is Parag Agrawal:

Parag Agrawal is an Indian American technology executive. He is the CEO of Twitter since November 2021. In 2011, he joined Twitter as software engineer.

Later in 2017, he became the chief technology officer. On 29th Novemner 2021, Twiter’s co-founder & former CEO Jack Dorsey announced that Parag Agrawal would be the new CEO of Twitter with immediate effect.

He also worked at AT&T labs, Inc., Microsoft Corporation & Yahoo. Parag was born on 21st May 1984 in Ajmer, Rajasthan, India.

His father Ram Gopal Agrawal was a senior official in the Indian Department of Atomic Energy. Her mother Shashi Agrawal is a former faculty of Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute.

His sister Kunal is faculty at Washington University. Later he shifted to Mumbai, Maharashtra. He completed his school studies at Atomic Energy Central School No.4.

Singer Shreya Ghoshal was his classmate. At the 2001, International Physics Olympiad held in Turkey, he won a gold medal.

In the Joint Entrance Exam in 2000, he earned 77th rank. In 2005, he completed his B.Tech in computer science & engineering from IIT Bombay.

Later he shifted to US to pursue a PhD in computer science from Stanford University under the guidance of Jennifer Widom.

Agrawal is married to Vineeta Agrawal. She is a general partner at Andreessen Horowitz, a leading venture capital firm. The couple have a son named Ansh.

Agrawal held leadership positions at Yahoo! Research & Microsoft Researches before joining Twitter in 2011. 

In October 2017, Twitter appointed Agrawal as chief technology officer (CTO) following the departure of Adam Massinger.

Later on December 2019, Jack Dorsey, co-founder & former CEO of Twitter announced that Agrawal would be in charge of Project Bluesky, an initiative to develop a decentralized social network protocol.

In November 2020, it was asked about balancing the protection of free speech as a core value and the endeavor to combat misinformation to Agrawal.

He replied, “Our role is not to be bound by the First Amendment, but our role is to serve a healthy public conversation… focus less on thinking about free speech, but thinking about how the times have changed.”

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced that he was resigning from Twitter and that Agrawal would be the new CEO of the company on 29th November 2021.

After that announcement, he faced criticism from conservatives for a 2010 tweet that read, “If they are not gonna make a distinction between Muslims and extremists, then why should I distinguish between white people and racists.”

He claimed to be quoting Aasif Mandvi during a story on The Daily Show.
