An interview with Parul Agarwal Vk, Design director at FOAID Designs, an Architectural & Interior Design Firm
In this interview, Parul Agarwal VK, the Design Director at FOAID Designs, shares her journey in the world of architecture and interior design.
With a passion for creating spaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing, she reveals the innovative approach that defines FOAID Designs. Parul discusses the evolving landscape of design, the challenges she faces, and her vision for the future of architecture.
Can you tell us about your journey into architecture and design? What inspired you to pursue this field?
Parul Agarwal VK: As a child, I was deeply inspired by my mother’s passion for decorating homes and her work with clients. Spending time at her office fueled my interest, showing me the creative freedom design offers.
This fascination led me to pursue architecture at MEASI Academy, Chennai, and a renowned institution in the South, where I realized this path was meant for me.
With internships, travel, and a master’s degree in Milan, my focus shifted to interiors and product design, areas where I found my true niche.
Having FOAID Designs as a strong foundation made this journey smoother, especially in a field where starting from scratch can be challenging.
When working on a new project, how do you approach the design process from concept to completion?
Parul Agarwal VK: The design process begins with thorough research, even when familiar with the subject, to ensure informed decisions. Research, combined with client requirements and concept development, forms the foundation of design.
A site study is crucial, considering zones, climate, views, and directions, while Vastu principles often assist in effective planning.
Material selection plays a key role, seamlessly integrating functionality and aesthetics for practical outcomes. When these elements come together, design becomes a creative and enjoyable challenge, avoiding monotony and fostering unique, dynamic results.
In your opinion, how important is sustainability in design today, and how does FOAID Designs incorporate sustainable practices into its projects?
Parul Agarwal VK: Sustainability is at the core of our design approach at FOAID Designs, addressing the challenges of pollution, technology, and overpopulation. We integrate eco-friendly practices across projects, including:
- Efficient HVAC: Utilizing VRV or VRF systems for residential and commercial spaces.
- Eco-conscious Materials: Opting for non-VOC paints, clay-based products, reusable
- Factory-made furniture and water/heat-resistant options.
- Energy-efficient Lighting: Using LED or solar-powered solutions.
- Local Sourcing: Reducing carbon footprint by sourcing within 5–10 km of the site.
- Adaptive Reuse: Repurposing existing site elements and minimizing waste.
- Material Reuse: Storing and repurposing excess materials across projects.
These practices ensure our designs are not only functional and beautiful but also environmentally responsible.
Can you share a project that was particularly challenging in terms of design, and how did you overcome those challenges?
Parul Agarwal VK: One of our most challenging projects in 2020 was the Sarawgi Complex in Kathmandu, which we managed entirely remotely. Navigating an unfamiliar territory, we began with thorough research on local materials, vendors, and contractors.
A dedicated on-site project manager ensured seamless communication and real-time updates. We produced precise, detailed drawings to eliminate execution doubts and submitted material lists well in advance to ensure timely delivery.
Collaboration with our clients was constant, fostering trust and alignment throughout. To guarantee quality, we sourced furniture from China, adhering to strict specifications. These careful measures enabled us to execute the project smoothly despite the challenges.
What advice would you give to aspiring architects and designers who want to make their mark in the industry?
Parul Agarwal VK: As an aspiring architect, I see each project as an opportunity to learn and grow, uncovering new concepts, materials, and approaches.
This field is vast, offering endless opportunities to explore and evolve, whether through understanding diverse sites, collaborating with people, or mastering intricate details.
Patience is essential there will be highs and lows, periods of intense work, and moments of calm. The key is to stay positive, adapt to challenges, and continue pursuing what you love.
Passion and perseverance are what keep us moving forward and thriving in this ever-evolving profession.
Parul Agarwal VK’s insights provide a glimpse into the creative process behind FOAID Designs. Her dedication to crafting unique, purposeful spaces continues to inspire the design industry.
As she leads the firm forward, her vision promises to shape the future of architectural and interior design, blending innovation with timeless beauty.
