Interview with Parveen Brar, Woman Entrepreneur & Founder of Defence Wards Matrimony

Parveen Brar is the founder of Defence Wards Matrimony a company established in 2015 and she has been responsible for managing and directing the Defence Wards Matrimony company toward its primary goals and objectives of providing the best platform for matrimony for the defence personnel.

She oversees employment decisions at all executive levels of the company. She leads a team of employees who make major decisions about the company including operations, design, launches, joint ventures, or large-scale expansion etc.

She did her schooling from the prestigious institute Sacred Heart Dalhousie and master’s degree in Psychology from Panjab University. Brar spent five years as Human Dimensions’ HR Head.

Apart from professional career, Brar has always been passionate about making her bit of contribution to society by volunteering and contributing to AWWA(Army wife’s Welfare Association ) and other NGOs actively in the field of women empowerment etc .

The NGO very specifically looks after the physical and emotional rehabilitation of widows of Army personnel killed in action.

In addition, Brar founded Defence Wards Matrimony to assist the military personnel(Serving and veterans and their wards ) PAN-India and abroad in finding prospective spouses as she married into the army family she understood that they come from a diverse yet unique background and are community by themself bonding them together.

Please tell us a little about your entrepreneurial journey

Parveen Brar: Defence Wards Matrimony, a matrimonial site for military veterans and their descendants, was founded by me in 2015. The website was launched to find suitable partners with a background in the defence industry.

I have been responsible for leading and managing the company to achieve its primary goals and objectives, which include giving defence personnel the ideal platform for marriage.

In addition, I supervise a team of employees who make critical decisions for the organisation on operations, design, product launches, joint ventures, and substantial growth, including achieving the overall vision, marketing and strategy for the website. I oversee all employment, operations, design and upgrade decisions at the executive level.

I did my schooling at Sacred Heart Dalhousie and a Master’s degree in psychology from Panjab University.

Before founding Defence Wards Matrimony, I served as Human Dimensions’ HR Director for five years. Additionally, I have always been passionate about giving back to society.

Therefore, I have been volunteering and actively participating in organisations like AWWA (Army wife’s Welfare Association), including other NGOs that promote women’s empowerment.

The NGO primarily cares for the widows of Army service members killed in combat and their physical and mental recovery.

Parveen Brar: Founded in April 2015 by Mrs Parveen Brar, Defence Wards Matrimony is India’s first and only platform that serves matrimonial assistance to members of the Indian Defence Force and their families.

It is a user-friendly application available for iOS and Android devices that facilitates the shortlisting of matches based on a consumer’s preferences. With a subscription-based business model, the company offers a wide range of membership options.

Over the past few years, the company has experienced continuous growth in terms of a rise in subscribers by 45% and Yo-Y growth by 60% with a team of more than 20 dedicated professionals.

What is your mission and vision at the outset?

Parveen Brar: We founded Defence Wards Matrimony to assist the military personnel (serving veterans and their wards) PAN-India and abroad in finding prospective spouses.

Since I was married into an army family, I could understand how defence people have diverse yet unique backgrounds and are a community by themselves bonding together.

Our company has so far catered to more than 10,000 people and made thousands of successful matrimonial bonds. I envision to continue doing it not only in India but also for defence families and children abroad. 

What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?

Parveen Brar: Our most important lesson learnt was the rapid growth and changing mediums of technology and our adaptation to it.

What was the inspiration behind turning an entrepreneur or Startup

Parveen Brar: While looking for suitable matches for my daughters, one of the main criteria was someone with a defence background or an upbringing in the forces who may or may not be serving in the forces themselves.
