What inspired you to pursue dual careers as an artist and a fashion designer?

Praggya Sammor: I never planned to juggle two careers, but right now, I feel more like an artist than a fashion designer. Designing has been my main gig for years, while art was more of a passion and occasional side hustle. However, during the lockdown, when creating art became my lifeline, I discovered that it’s my true calling. So, I’ve embraced being a full-time artist and dabble in designing on the side. It’s where my soul finds its fulfillment.

How would you describe your creative process when designing both art and fashion pieces?

Praggya Sammor: My creative journey is like a dance where fashion design and art twirl together. It all begins with a in-depth study of  whatever triggers my creative being, sparking ideas that blossom into something beautiful.

When designing clothes, I sketch and design, playing with colors and textures to tell a tale of elegance and rebellion. It’s like painting with fabric. As an artist, my canvas is a playground for emotions. I use brushes, creating visual stories that reflect the beats of my soul.

In both worlds, the common thread is storytelling. Whether through a garment or a painting, I aim to share emotions and take people on a journey through beauty and imagination.

How do you balance expressing yourself as an artist with meeting the functional aspects of fashion design?

Praggya Sammor: Balancing my artistic soul with the practical demands of fashion design is a delicate balance. When I’m creating, I let my artistic intuition guide me, exploring colors, shapes, and emotions. However, as a designer, I know functionality is key.

I find the sweet spot where creativity meets practicality. It’s about infusing my designs with artistic flair while ensuring they are wearable and comfortable. Each stitch and color choice is a deliberate expression, both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

Ultimately, it’s a harmonious blend where my artistic voice shines through in a way that enhances, rather than compromises, the functionality of the fashion pieces I create.

Who or what are your main sources of inspiration for your artistic creations?

Praggya Sammor: I think inspiration is something which can hit you at any moment at any time, with any person , I don’t think there’s a special person, place or thing which can trigger it, like I end up drawing inspiration from various things , it could be either the people I meet in my daily life or someone in my family, a tv show I’m watching or a poem I heard, maybe when I am on vacation or something out in nature.

Then I take whatever inspired me and in my own style I paint it using my signature vibrant colors which I believe infuse happiness into my paintings, creating a lively and united atmosphere. Also, The essence of unity, is evident in my work, as I believe in the magic of togetherness. This approach is how I intertwine my inspirations into my art.

Do you believe you have a signature style that defines your work? If so, how would you describe it?

Praggya Sammor: In my art, I tell stories of togetherness, painting vibrant scenes filled with joy. The colors I choose are not just paint; they’re emotions, symbols of shared happiness and unity among kindred spirits. Each stroke carries the heartbeat of life’s vitality. To me, a life without zest is a canvas missing its brilliance.

I believe passionately that life should be a symphony of positive actions, and my art is a gentle nudge to embrace that vibrancy. It’s a plea to chase your passions freely, finding happiness in every twist of fate. I advocate for crafting your own joy, urging expressions through dance, paint, walks, or any pursuit that ignites your soul. Let go of the fear of judgment. Sing your song, dance to your rhythm. In the freedom of unbridled expression, there lies contentment and true happiness.

What challenges have you faced as an artist, and how did you overcome them?

Praggya Sammor: As a woman artist starting my career so late in my life, , it was tough to get recognition in a youth-focused art scene. Balancing the wisdom of age with the demand for contemporary relevance was tricky. Cultural norms and gender biases added complications, sometimes overshadowing my lifetime of artistic experience.

Despite dedicating my life to art, gaining recognition was an ongoing struggle. My resilience, both personally and artistically, kept me moving forward, hoping for a change in societal perspectives to value the contributions of women artists in India.

To overcome these challenges, I embraced my unique perspective and connected with fellow artists. Networking and participating in platforms that celebrated diversity amplifying my voice. Seeked mentorship and shared my experience and created a supportive community.

I Embraced digital platforms which helped showcase my work globally, breaking local biases. It was a journey of self-confidence, resilience, and authentic artistic expression to make a lasting impact on the evolving Indian art scene.
