Who is Prathap C Reddy?
Prathap C Reddy is a cardiologist and Indian entrepreneur who founded the Apollo Hospitals, the first corporate chain of hospitals in India.
Dr. Prathap Chandra Reddy ranked 48th in India Today’s 2017 list of India’s 50 most powerful people. Prathap C Reddy received the Padma Vibhushan and awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1991.
From a single hospital, Reddy became India’s largest healthcare entrepreneur and founder of Apollo Hospitals Ltd with over 50 hospitals in the country and abroad.
Personal life
Dr. Prathap Chandra Reddy has four daughters: Sangita Reddy, Preetha Reddy, Shobana Kamineni, and Suneeta Reddy; all are serving as directors in the Apollo Hospitals Limited.
Why did Dr. Prathap C Reddy decide to set up Apollo Hospitals?
After he’d returned home to India in 1970 after nearly a decade in the United States. In Madras, Dr. Reddy lost a thirty-eight-year-old patient because the man could not mobilize the resources in America for a heart bypass operation.
Raghava Reddy, his father who suffered from a brain hemorrhage and his mother who succumbed to cervical cancer.
He was not able to save his own father. He could not save Kumara Raja Muthiah, his dear friend who died of a sudden heart attack.
Lodged in his mind is the thought that had Apollo been in existence then, the lives of all of them could have been saved.
It is a thought, and it continues to drive him to continually search for sophisticated systems and better technologies to improve health care in India.
The idea came to Dr. Reddy’s mind that if Apollo had existed at that time, all lives could have been saved.
This thought was constantly focused by Dr. Reddy on how health care is delivered in a country like India with a population of over one billion.
He transformed health care by bringing widespread awareness of a simple, sensible method. – “that prevention is better than cure”
He started schools and colleges for the training of nurses and children in rural areas in the belief that they should be part of the curriculum about health care.

In 1983, he started the first Apollo hospital with 150 beds and introduced international quality healthcare to India. During his thirty-year entrepreneurial journey, he has truly transformed India’s healthcare landscape.
Today, Apollo Hospitals Ltd is the largest hospital chain with over 50 hospitals in the country and abroad.
