AstroSage has always led from the front — from launching the first Hindi mobile app in 2001 to Kundli AI today. How do you maintain such consistent innovation in an industry often rooted in tradition?

Punit Pandey: Ever since I started my journey, I’ve been deeply troubled by one fact: while India produces one of the largest pools of engineers in the world, our contribution to globally successful tech products is almost negligible.

In India, the software products we use every day – WhatsApp, Facebook, Windows, Android – are all built by companies that have large numbers of Indian engineers, sometimes 40–50% of their teams.

Yet, the credit and success go entirely to American companies and their founders. Most Indian startups, unfortunately, are replicas of successful U.S. products.

I grew up inspired by stories of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, and I’ve always dreamt of building a globally successful product from India. To me, there’s only one way to achieve that: we must innovate. There is no other choice.

That conviction drove me to design India’s first Hindi mobile astrology app in 2001, years before ‘smartphone’ was a household word.

When Palm OS couldn’t display Hindi, we wrote our own fonts. When scalability limited human astrologers, we launched AstroSage Cloud in 2004 and, later, the world’s first AI astrologer, Bhrigoo.ai, in 2018. Kundli AI is the next chapter in that same story.

I understand instead of copying products from the west, if we solve real problems keeping the latest technology in forefront, innovation will follow. 

With increasing competition in the digital astrology space, what makes Kundli AI stand out?

To date, our platform has processed over 70 million user queries, and this data is used to refine and retrain our models continuously.
